Abstract: Methods and apparatus relating to network routing protocols to support power savings in network elements. A most utilized link path network topology for a computer network is discovered using a routing protocol such as a Spanning Tree, link-state, or distance vector routing protocol. In view of the most utilized link path network topology, links are identified as candidates for power management under which a power state of the link and associated network ports are managed to save power under applicable link conditions, such as low utilization. Link power-state change conditions are detected, and in response a corresponding change to the power state of a link is effected by changing the power-state of the network ports at the ends of the link. Power state changes include putting a link into a reduced power state, taking a link offline, and powering a link back up.

Abstract: Power-aware routing in Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) is designed to adequately prolong the lifetime of severely resource-constrained ad hoc wireless sensor nodes}. Recent research has identified the energy hole problem in single sink-based WSNs, a characteristic of the many-to-one (convergecast) traffic patterns. In this paper, we propose HYbrid Multi-hop routiNg (HYMN) algorithm, which is a hybrid of the two contemporary multi-hop routing algorithm architectures, namely, flat multi-hop routing that utilizes efficient transmission distances, and hierarchical multi-hop routing algorithms that capitalizes on data aggregation. We provide rigorous mathematical analysis for HYMN-optimize it and model its power consumption. In addition, through extensive simulations, we demonstrate the effective performance of HYMN in terms of superior connectivity.

Abstract: An on-demand node-disjoint multipath routing protocol is proposed to overcome the shortcomings of on-demand unipath routing protocols like AODV and DSR. The protocol has two novel aspects compared to the other on-demand multipath protocols: it reduces routing overhead dramatically and achieves multiple node-disjoint routing paths. Simulation results show that the proposed protocol achieves lower data delay and control overhead as well as higher packet delivery ratio.
