TL;DR: In this paper, vertically aligned and interconnected graphene networks are first used as the filler, which is prepared by a controlled three-step procedure: formation of graphene oxide liquid crystals, oriented freeze casting, and high-temperature annealing reduction under Ar. The obtained composite, at an ultralow graphene loading of 0.92 vol %, exhibits a high thermal conductivity (2.13 W m−1 K−1) that is equivalent to a dramatic enhancement of 1231% compared to the pure matrix.
Abstract: Efficient removal of heat via thermal interface materials has become one of the most critical challenges in the development of modern microelectronic devices. However, traditional polymer composites present limited thermal conductivity even when highly loaded with highly thermally conductive fillers due to the lack of efficient heat transfer channels. In this work, vertically aligned and interconnected graphene networks are first used as the filler, which is prepared by a controlled three-step procedure: formation of graphene oxide liquid crystals, oriented freeze casting, and high-temperature annealing reduction under Ar. The obtained composite, at an ultralow graphene loading of 0.92 vol %, exhibits a high thermal conductivity (2.13 W m–1 K–1) that is equivalent to a dramatic enhancement of 1231% compared to the pure matrix. Furthermore, the composite also presents a much reduced coefficient of thermal expansion (∼37.4 ppm K–1) and increased glass transition temperature (135.4 °C). This strategy provide...

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors provide a brief review of researches on nanofluid flow and heat transfer via semi-analytical and numerical methods and show that the Nusselt number is an increasing function of nanoparticle volume fraction.
Abstract: The use of additives in the base fluid like water or ethylene glycol is one of the techniques applied to augment the heat transfer. Newly an innovative nanometer sized particles have been dispersed in the base fluid in heat transfer fluids. The fluids containing the solid nanometer size particle dispersion are called ‘nanofluids’. Two main categories were discussed in detail as the single-phase modeling which the combination of nanoparticle and base fluid is considered as a single-phase mixture with steady properties and the two-phase modeling in which the nanoparticle properties and behaviors are considered separately from the base fluid properties and behaviors. Both single phase and two phase models have been presented in this paper. This paper intends to provide a brief review of researches on nanofluid flow and heat transfer via semi analytical and numerical methods. It was also found that Nusselt number is an increasing function of nanoparticle volume fraction, Rayleigh number and Reynolds number, while it is a decreasing function of Hartmann number.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors show that the wetting symmetry of a droplet can be broken at high temperature by creating two concurrent thermal states (Leidenfrost and contact-boiling) on a topographically patterned surface, thus engendering a preferential motion of the droplet towards the region with a higher heat transfer coefficient.
Abstract: Directed motion of liquid droplets is of considerable importance in various water and thermal management technologies. Although various methods to generate such motion have been developed at low temperature, they become rather ineffective at high temperature, where the droplet transits to a Leidenfrost state. In this state, it becomes challenging to control and direct the motion of the highly mobile droplets towards specific locations on the surface without compromising the effective heat transfer. Here we report that the wetting symmetry of a droplet can be broken at high temperature by creating two concurrent thermal states (Leidenfrost and contact-boiling) on a topographically patterned surface, thus engendering a preferential motion of a droplet towards the region with a higher heat transfer coefficient. The fundamental understanding and the ability to control the droplet dynamics at high temperature have promising applications in various systems requiring high thermal efficiency, operational security and fidelity. Controlled motion of a droplet on a hot surface is hampered by the formation of an evaporation layer below the droplet (Leidenfrost effect). But a cleverly patterned surface induces a Leidenfrost–contact-boiling state, directing the droplet’s motion.

TL;DR: In this paper, a comprehensive review on the research progress on the enhancement of effective thermal conductivity and effective dynamic viscosity of nanofluids is presented, with the consideration of particle size valid in their experimental range.
Abstract: The determination of thermo-physical properties and especially thermal conductivity and viscosity were important for evaluating heat transfer coefficients either for single or two phase flow. The thermo-physical properties measurements and heat transfer observations were mostly obtained with nanoparticles above 10 nm. Various researchers measured and modelled for the determination of thermal conductivity and viscosity of nanofluids. Most of the investigators developed equations for the estimation of thermal conductivity and viscosity as a function of percentage volume concentration, temperature and sometimes with the consideration of particle size valid in their experimental range. Nanofluids are considered to have great potential for heat transfer enhancement and are applied in heat transfer processes. Many studies were carried out to investigate this phenomenon. The main aim of this study is to give a comprehensive review on the research progress on the enhancement of effective thermal conductivity and effective dynamic viscosity of nanofluids.

TL;DR: In this article, the effect of a variable spatial magnetic field on ferro-nanofluid flow and heat transfer in a double-sided lid-driven enclosure with a sinusoidal hot wall is investigated.
Abstract: In this work, the effect of a variable spatial magnetic field on ferro-nanofluid flow and heat transfer in a double-sided lid-driven enclosure with a sinusoidal hot wall is investigated. The working fluid is a mixture of iron oxide (Fe3O4) nanoparticles and water and is referred to as a ferro-nanofluid. The control volume-based finite element method (CVFEM) is used to solve the governing equations in the stream function–vorticity formulation. In deriving the governing equations for this investigation, the effect of both ferro-hydrodynamics and magneto-hydrodynamics is taken into account. The numerical calculations are performed for different governing parameters namely; the Reynolds number, nanoparticle volume fraction, magnetic number (arising from Ferrohydrodynamics (FHD) consideration), and the Hartmann number (arising from Magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) consideration). The results show that an enhancement in heat transfer has a direct relationship with the Reynolds number and the Hartmann number, ...

TL;DR: In this article, the authors present a review of current and future liquid, gas, supercritical, two-phase and particulate heat transfer fluid (HTF) technologies for solar thermal power plants.
Abstract: The Heat transfer fluid (HTF) is a key component of solar thermal power plant because it significantly impacts the receiver efficiency, determines the type of thermodynamic cycle and the performance it can achieve, and determines the thermal energy storage technology that must be used. This paper reviews current and future liquid, gas, supercritical, two-phase and particulate HTFs. Thermophysical properties are presented as well as correlations to determine the receiver tube-HTF heat transfer coefficients. Variations of convective heat transfer coefficients as a function of temperature are illustrated for all selected HTFs in their stable operation temperature ranges. Finally, recent developments on new HTFs working at 700 °C and beyond are discussed.

TL;DR: In this article, an overview of spray cooling in three stages (single phase regime, two phase regime and critical heat flux regime) is presented, and the influence factors, spray characteristics, heating surface characteristics, fluid characteristics and external environment characteristics, were analyzed in detail.
Abstract: With the increasing power density of electronic chips, large radar, laser diode array and other equipments, the conventional heat dissipation methods are difficult to achieve the desired thermal control requirements increasingly. Spray cooling has attracted widespread attention due to its advantages in high heat flux removal such as less flow rate demand, high heat dissipation capacity, low superheat degree, no temperature overshoot and no contact thermal resistance with the heating surface. As of today, lots of researchers engage in this field and numerous achievements of spray cooling are obtained theoretically and experimentally. In this paper, an overview with spray cooling was completed. The current research progresses of heat transfer mechanisms of spray cooling in the three stages (single-phase regime, two-phase regime and critical heat flux regime) were summarized, and the influence factors, spray characteristics, heating surface characteristics, fluid characteristics and external environment characteristics, were analyzed in detail. The flash evaporation cooling, a special form of spray cooling, was also explored by a number of studies due to its irreplaceable advantage in low pressure environment or in space. Film flash evaporation and droplet flash evaporation significantly improve the cooling capacity of system and utilization of working fluid. In fact, the application of flash evaporation cooling is profound for development and expansion of spray cooling. Additionally, spray cooling system and nozzle were also elaborated in the paper.
