Abstract: This paper reviews problems and possible design concepts for a remote data access system in a heterogeneous computer network The possible system architectures are considered and analysed with regard to their influence on a higher level protocol It also stresses the goals of the solutions with respect to incompatibilities between data management systems, and the way in which these goals are met Advantages and disadvantages of the proposed approaches are discussed for different network environments

Abstract: In order to perform the distributed EDP tasks in a research institute a computer network was designed and installed in the Hahn-Meitner-Institut for Nuclear Research in Berlin. A general overview of this network (HMI-NET) and its facilities is presented. The paper reviews problems and possible design concepts of a remote data access system in a heterogeneous network. The adopted solution for the HMI-NET and its most important design characteristics are discussed.
