TL;DR: The results from extensive simulations demonstrate that the proposed algorithm is currently the best scalable solution to the influence maximization problem and significantly outperforms all other scalable heuristics to as much as 100%--260% increase in influence spread.
Abstract: Influence maximization, defined by Kempe, Kleinberg, and Tardos (2003), is the problem of finding a small set of seed nodes in a social network that maximizes the spread of influence under certain influence cascade models. The scalability of influence maximization is a key factor for enabling prevalent viral marketing in large-scale online social networks. Prior solutions, such as the greedy algorithm of Kempe et al. (2003) and its improvements are slow and not scalable, while other heuristic algorithms do not provide consistently good performance on influence spreads. In this paper, we design a new heuristic algorithm that is easily scalable to millions of nodes and edges in our experiments. Our algorithm has a simple tunable parameter for users to control the balance between the running time and the influence spread of the algorithm. Our results from extensive simulations on several real-world and synthetic networks demonstrate that our algorithm is currently the best scalable solution to the influence maximization problem: (a) our algorithm scales beyond million-sized graphs where the greedy algorithm becomes infeasible, and (b) in all size ranges, our algorithm performs consistently well in influence spread --- it is always among the best algorithms, and in most cases it significantly outperforms all other scalable heuristics to as much as 100%--260% increase in influence spread.

TL;DR: This paper presents a heuristic for the pickup and delivery problem based on an extension of the large neighborhood search heuristic previously suggested for solving the vehicle routing problem with time windows that is very robust and is able to adapt to various instance characteristics.
Abstract: The pickup and delivery problem with time windows is the problem of serving a number of transportation requests using a limited amount of vehicles. Each request involves moving a number of goods from a pickup location to a delivery location. Our task is to construct routes that visit all locations such that corresponding pickups and deliveries are placed on the same route, and such that a pickup is performed before the corresponding delivery. The routes must also satisfy time window and capacity constraints. This paper presents a heuristic for the problem based on an extension of the large neighborhood search heuristic previously suggested for solving the vehicle routing problem with time windows. The proposed heuristic is composed of a number of competing subheuristics that are used with a frequency corresponding to their historic performance. This general framework is denoted adaptive large neighborhood search. The heuristic is tested on more than 350 benchmark instances with up to 500 requests. It is able to improve the best known solutions from the literature for more than 50% of the problems. The computational experiments indicate that it is advantageous to use several competing subheuristics instead of just one. We believe that the proposed heuristic is very robust and is able to adapt to various instance characteristics.

TL;DR: A general genetic algorithm to address a wide variety of sequencing and optimization problems including multiple machine scheduling, resource allocation, and the quadratic assignment problem is presented.
Abstract: In this paper we present a general genetic algorithm to address a wide variety of sequencing and optimization problems including multiple machine scheduling, resource allocation, and the quadratic assignment problem. When addressing such problems, genetic algorithms typically have difficulty maintaining feasibility from parent to offspring. This is overcome with a robust representation technique called random keys. Computational results are shown for multiple machine scheduling, resource allocation, and quadratic assignment problems. TL;DR: An O(n3) heuristic algorithm is described for solving d-city travelling salesman problems (TSP) whose cost matrix satisfies the triangularity condition and a worst-case analysis of this heuristic shows that the ratio of the answer obtained to the optimum TSP solution is strictly less than 3/2.
Abstract: : An O(n sup 3) heuristic algorithm is described for solving n-city travelling salesman problems (TSP) whose cost matrix satisfies the triangularity condition. The algorithm involves as substeps the computation of a shortest spanning tree of the graph G defining the TSP, and the finding of a minimum cost perfect matching of a certain induced subgraph of G. A worst-case analysis of this heuristic shows that the ratio of the answer obtained to the optimum TSP solution is strictly less than 3/2. This represents a 50% reduction over the value 2 which was the previously best known such ratio for the performance of other polynomial-growth algorithms for the TSP.
