TL;DR: In this paper, a system and method for tuning a broadcast receiver such as a television set with a subscriber optical interface (SOI) that can be located outside a subscriber's premises and can be adjacent to the user's premises is presented.
Abstract: A system and method for tuning a broadcast receiver such as a television set with a subscriber optical interface (SOI) that can be located outside a subscriber's premises and can be adjacent to the subscriber's premises. For example, a subscriber optical interface can be mounted on a side of a home which converts optical data and optical video signals received from an optical waveguide to electrical signals. Because of the hardware contained in the subscriber optical interface, any video processing hardware that is present within the subscriber's premises for tuning video programs can be reduced or substantially eliminated without sacrificing a range of services available to a subscriber from a fiber-to-the-home optical network.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors describe a twisted pair telephone wire local loop system with a digital filter at a subscriber gateway and transmit a plurality of frequency division multiplexed signals via a transceiver configured to send and receive via multiple independent channels located at the subscriber gateway, where the frequency translation moves a signal to an available frequency band identified by the first controller of the switching office.
Abstract: Example multiple channel systems for a twisted pair telephone wire local loop system are disclosed. An example method includes implementing, via a digital filter at a subscriber gateway, a frequency translation received from a first controller of a switching office in response to a bandwidth allocation request, wherein the frequency translation moves a signal to an available frequency band identified by the first controller of the switching office; operating a second controller at the subscriber gateway to control the digital filter; and transmitting a plurality of frequency division multiplexed signals via a first transceiver configured to send and receive via multiple independent channel located at the subscriber gateway.

TL;DR: In this article, a method for identifying a telecommunications subscriber was proposed, in which a call from a second telecommunication device (MFG2) of a second telecommunications subscriber is first signalled to a first telecommunications device of a first telecommunication subscriber.
Abstract: The invention relates to a method for identifying a telecommunications subscriber. According to said method, a call from a second telecommunications device (MFG2) of a second telecommunications subscriber is first signalled to a first telecommunications device (MFG1) of a first telecommunications subscriber. Device information (GI1), which indicates the type of subscriber data that the first telecommunications device is configured to process, is then sent from a first to a second telecommunications device. Subscriber data (TD2) is subsequently transmitted from the second to the first telecommunications device, in accordance with the information from the first device. It is also conceivable that device information (GI2) can be transmitted from the second to the first telecommunications device, in accordance with which subscriber data (TD1) can finally be transmitted from the first to the second telecommunications device. The use of device information that is exchanged between two telecommunications devices and indicates which subscriber data should be transmitted to the respective other telecommunications device thus permits a reduction in the data flow between two telecommunications devices with respect to subscriber data, as only the desired subscriber data is transmitted.

TL;DR: In this paper, an improved device apparatus and method detects the current data rate offset of the HDSL data rate being utilized and the data rate of the datastream being transmitted through the link.
Abstract: An apparatus and method are described that allows for improved wander jitter reduction in communication devices and associated communication links, in particular on HDSL communication devices and links. The improved device apparatus and method detects the current data rate offset of the HDSL data rate being utilized and the data rate of the datastream being transmitted through the HDSL communication link and allows for the transmitting HDSL communication device to adjust the HDSL data rate to promote instantaneous data rate offsets that are close to wander jitter minimum points. The improved device apparatus and method also allows for the characterization of communication devices for their specific wander jitter low activity points by sweeping the input data rate being transmitted at differing HDSL data rates.

Abstract: Disclosed is an operation, administration, and maintenance method for very high bit rate digital subscriber line, which has a simplified frame structure, can be easily modified, and can provide various information. In very high bit rate digital subscriber line system which performs a link set between central office and customer premises equipment connected to each other by a very high bit rate digital subscriber line by transmitting/receiving very high bit rate digital subscriber line overhead control frame having operation code, unique operation codes are identically set at the central office and the customer premises equipment. Unique operation codes prescribe all kinds of messages to be transmitted between central office and customer premises equipment. Operation, administration, and maintenance for customer premises equipment is performed by exchanging messages by central office and customer premises equipment in very high bit rate digital subscriber line overhead control frames. Very high bit rate digital subscriber line overhead control frames each has operation code which prescribes corresponding message among set operation codes.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors present the problems caused by the Asymmetrical Digital Subscriber Line splitters (4) and (7), which change the transmission characteristics of the Integrated Service Digital Network infrastructure (6) between the end-user location (12) and the central location (11), and result in the impossibility for the enduser to make voice calls or to send data.
Abstract: Problems arise when using an Integrated Service Digital Network infrastructure (6) for providing Asymmetrical Digital Subscriber Line technology. These problems do not always occur but depend on the distance between the end-user location (12) and the central location (11), and the type of network termination (3), and result in the impossibility for the end-user to make voice calls or to send data. The problems are caused by the Asymmetrical Digital Subscriber Line splitters (4) and (7), which change the transmission characteristics of the Integrated Service Digital Network infrastructure (6) between the end-user location (12) and the central location (11). The transmission characteristics that are changed by the Asymmetrical Digital Subscriber Line splitters (4) and (7) are impedance, propagation time and insertion loss. The deviation is frequency-dependent and falls outside the internationally-defined ranges for these transmission characteristics.

TL;DR: The author designed and developed a high-speed (>2 Mb/sec), residential IP connection by using a four-wire HDSL circuit terminated directly at an academic institution and the monthly cost per throughput capacity is significantly lower than typical ISPs in the region.
Abstract: As many authors have articulated, the "last mile problem" is often cited as a persistent engineering obstacle in deploying residential broadband solutions. Additionally, some academic researchers may require completely unfiltered Internet access, short network paths to Internet2, SIP, QoS, IPv6, and other functionality that may not be offered by commercial ISPs. This paper describes how the author designed and developed a high-speed (>2 Mb/sec), residential IP connection by using a four-wire HDSL circuit terminated directly at an academic institution. Technologically, this was done by extending the Ethernet frame beyond the institution's physical boundaries with transparent MAC-layer forwarding controlled by relatively low-cost, dedicated HDSL transceivers. The process was strategically planned, documented, tested, and managed across seven individuals in four disparate organizations and the monthly cost per throughput capacity is significantly lower than typical ISPs in the region.
