Abstract: A system that incorporates teachings of the present disclosure may include, for example, receiving, by a first line card coupled to minimally twisted or non-twisted pair cables, a very high digital subscriber line signal, modifying the very high digital subscriber line signal for transmission over the minimally twisted or non-twisted pair cables to generate an updated very high digital subscriber line signal that overcomes a transmission deficiency, and transmitting from the first line card the updated very high digital subscriber line signal to a second line card to cause the second line card to receive the adapted very high digital subscriber line signal at a desired signal quality and convert the updated very high digital subscriber line signal to a very high digital subscriber line signal for presentation of interactive television services at the customer premise equipment. Other embodiments are disclosed.

Abstract: The transmission method involves using data signals which are modulated on a periodic carrier signal. The carrier signal has a frequency outside the speech signal band. The transmission is carried out via analogue subscriber line (TL) during the speech connection between a subscriber terminal (TEE) and a telephone exchange. Preferably the data signal contains authentification information for the subscriber. The carrier signal is provided by the periodic tariff pulse signal which is transmitted from the switching centre to the subscriber terminal.

Abstract: A model for ADSL service area evaluation, considering the losses of channel and the electromagnetic induction from HDSL signals is proposed. The evaluation is made with the maximum distance from central office that the ADSL signal can reach with a specific bit rate. The models parameters are gotten from real measures on the principal types of cables. Some simulations are made with the presented model to analyze the service area for ADSL signals.

Abstract: Interleaved trellis coded modulation is described. It utilizes multiple encoder/decoder pairs as a means of mitigating the effects of impulse noise in the high-rate digital subscriber line (HDSL) and related applications such as the asymmetric digital subscriber line (ADSL). The component code for the interleaved scheme is a trellis code coupled with 32-quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) which has the same spectral efficiency as uncoded 16-QAM. It is found that the interleaved trellis coded modulation scheme is more robust against impulsive noise than the conventional trellis coded modulation. Two trellis codes are considered for the component code for the interleaved scheme: an eight-state code and a simple four-state code. The interleaved scheme using the four-state code performs better than the interleaved scheme using the eight-state code in an impulsive noise environment, even though the asymptotic coding gain for the four-state code in additive white Gaussian noise is less than that of the eight-state code. Computer simulation results are presented for the interleaved and conventional schemes using the two trellis codes for actual impulses with variable durations. >
