Abstract: In this paper, we report, for the first time to our knowledge, the modeling and the design of a miniaturized integrated optical sensor, based on a multiple quantum-well (MQW) microring laser, to be used in gyroscope systems. The device can be fully integrated on a single chip and used either in low (e.g., vehicles for land transport) or high (e.g., ships, airplanes, spaceborne platforms) sensitivity navigation systems. The model includes the influence of some physical effects, such as quantum noise, lock in, thermal effect, and sidewall roughness-induced losses. Very good performance has been obtained in terms of gyro quantum limit, operating regions of detectable velocity, thermal range of operation, and power consumption. The proposed architecture shows significant manifold advantages with respect to other existing optical solutions: no polarization-induced noise, no use of frequency-locking techniques, negligible bending losses, high cavity quality factor, complete evaluation of the rotation speed, predictable thermal variation of the gyro scale factor, and very high dynamic range.

Abstract: Methods, systems and apparatuses proving a high dynamic range imager. Multiple photosensor integration periods are used to capture pixel signal information. A transistor gate is used to remove electrons from the photosensor between the two successive integration periods providing a non-linear pixel response characteristic having a knee point. Each pixel is calibrated for the knee point which is used during adjustment of the pixel output signal. Each pixel may also be calibrated with an arbitrary signal response curve for multiple light intensities.

Abstract: We design a high dynamic range electric field sensor based on domain inverted electro-optic (E-O) polymer Y-fed directional coupler for electromagnetic wave detection. This electrode-less, all optical, wideband electrical field sensor is fabricated using standard processing for E-O polymer photonic devices. Experimental results demonstrate effective detection of electric field from 16.7V/m to 750KV/m at a frequency of 1GHz, and spurious free measurement range of 70dB.

Abstract: Linearization of integrated optic intensity modulators significantly reduces the two-tone intermodulation distortion. The resulting intermodulation distortion produced by these modulators then varies as the input power to the fifth-order link system, the overall intermodulation product is a combination of third-order and higher-order terms. The authors determine the dynamic range of a cascaded microwave network consisting of a preamplifier, a high-dynamic-range fiber-optic link with a highly linear modulator, and a postamplifier. An expression is found that relates the intermodulation power at the output to the relative suppression from the signal level. As an example, a hypothetical 10-GHz low-distortion fiber-optic link that has a dynamic range of 125 dB in a bandwidth of 1 Hz is cascaded with various preamplifiers, and it is shown that the dynamic range of the system is reduced by as much as 20 dB, depending on the third-order intercept of the amplifier.

Abstract: A photodiode sensor for use as a pixel element of a sensor array includes the sensor area segmented into a plurality of discrete portions. Each discrete portion has a distinctive responsiveness to incident illumination, either with regard to capacitance or sensitivity. The portions are in common communication with a data line for generating a sum charged output representative of the illumination on the cumulative sensor portions. Since the dynamic range of the cumulative discrete portions is greater than any single one sensor portion, a wider dynamic range for sensor operability is achieved.
