Abstract: High-harmonic generation by a laser-driven solid slab is simulated using time-dependent density functional theory. Multiple harmonic plateaus up to very high harmonic orders are observed already at surprisingly low field strengths. The full all-electron harmonic spectra are, in general, very different from those of any individual Kohn-Sham orbital. Freezing the Kohn-Sham potential instead is found to be a good approximation for the laser intensities and harmonic orders considered. The origins of the plateau cutoffs are explained in terms of band gaps that can be reached by Kohn-Sham electrons and holes moving through the band structure.

Abstract: We review recent progress towards imaging the electronic wavefunctions and nuclear dynamics of small molecules using the high order harmonics emitted when a molecule experiences an intense laser field. We illustrate that the essence of high harmonic emission is contained in the recombination amplitude between the continuum portion of the electronic wavefunction, that is formed through field ionization and which is accelerated and driven back to recollide in the laser field, and the bound electronic state. We review for the non-specialist some recent experimental and theoretical work dealing with high harmonic generation (HHG) in molecules. Particular attention is paid to two types of experiment recently performed in our group. The first of these types of experiment is the measurement of signatures of molecular electronic structure using HHG from molecules with a fixed orientation in space. The second is the use of HHG to track extremely fast proton rearrangement following ionization in light molecules, using the intrinsic temporal variation of the recolliding electron energy to extract these dynamics from measurements of the high harmonics.

Abstract: We present a first-principles study of ionization and high-order harmonic generation by benzene aligned in the polarization plane of a short circularly polarized laser pulse. Time-dependent density-functional theory within the adiabatic local-density approximation is employed to describe the 30 valence-electron dynamics in three dimensions. The multielectron approach enables us to study the effect of very strong laser fields, 10 14 ‐1 0 15 Wc m 22 , where multiple ionization and high-order harmonic generation interplay. Large ionization currents are formed, causing ionization of 1‐ 4 electron charges, while strong high-order harmonic generation is observed. The well-known recollision mechanism of high-order harmonic generation plays a part for moderate laser intensities but is fully suppressed for strong laser fields. The harmonic generation spectra are characterized by two distinguishable plateaus, where the structure of the first plateau is dominated by the 6k 6 1( k50,1,...) selection rule. The number of harmonics in the second plateau is insensitive to the duration of the pulse. The peaks appear in pairs or in threesomes, depending on the pulse duration.

Abstract: High harmonic radiation is produced when atoms or molecules are ionized by an intense femtosecond laser pulse. The radiated spectrum has been shown experimentally to contain information on the electronic structure of the molecule, which can be interpreted as an image of a single molecular orbital. Previous theory for high harmonic generation has been limited to the single-active-electron approximation. Utilizing semisudden approximation, the authors develop a theory of the recombination step in high harmonic generation and tomographic reconstruction in multielectron systems, taking into account electron spin statistics and electron-electron correlations within the parent molecule and the ion. They show that the resulting corrections significantly modify the theoretical predictions, and bring them in a better agreement with experiment. They further show that exchange contributions to harmonic radiation can be used to extract additional information on the electronic wave function.
