Abstract: Efficiently and accurately detecting pedestrians plays a very important role in many computer vision applications such as video surveillance and smart cars. In order to find the right feature for this task, we first present a comprehensive experimental study on pedestrian detection using state-of-the-art locally extracted features (e.g., local receptive fields, histogram of oriented gradients, and region covariance). Building upon the findings of our experiments, we propose a new, simpler pedestrian detector using the covariance features. Unlike the work in [1], where the feature selection and weak classifier training are performed on the Riemannian manifold, we select features and train weak classifiers in the Euclidean space for faster computation. To this end, AdaBoost with weighted Fisher linear discriminant analysis-based weak classifiers are designed. A cascaded classifier structure is constructed for efficiency in the detection phase. Experiments on different datasets prove that the new pedestrian detector is not only comparable to the state-of-the-art pedestrian detectors but it also performs at a faster speed. To further accelerate the detection, we adopt a faster strategy-multiple layer boosting with heterogeneous features-to exploit the efficiency of the Haar feature and the discriminative power of the covariance feature. Experiments show that, by combining the Haar and covariance features, we speed up the original covariance feature detector [1] by up to an order of magnitude in detection time with a slight drop in detection performance.

Abstract: Automatically detecting objects with complex appearance and arbitrary orientations in remote sensing imagery (RSI) is a big challenge. To explore a possible solution to the problem, this paper develops an object detection framework using a discriminatively trained mixture model. It is mainly composed of two stages: model training and object detection. In the model training stage, multi-scale histogram of oriented gradients (HOG) feature pyramids of all training samples are constructed. A mixture of multi-scale deformable part-based models is then trained for each object category by training a latent Support Vector Machine (SVM), where each part-based model is composed of a coarse root filter, a set of higher resolution part filters, and a set of deformation models. In the object detection stage, given a test imagery, its multi-scale HOG feature pyramid is firstly constructed. Then, object detection is performed by computing and thresholding the response of the mixture model. The quantitative comparisons with state-of-the-art approaches on two datasets demonstrate the effectiveness of the developed framework.

Abstract: Subspace learning methods are very sensitive to the illumination, translation, and rotation variances in image recognition. Thus, they have not obtained promising performance for palmprint recognition so far. In this paper, we propose a new descriptor of palmprint named histogram of oriented lines (HOL), which is a variant of histogram of oriented gradients (HOG). HOL is not very sensitive to changes of illumination, and has the robustness against small transformations because slight translations and rotations make small histogram value changes. Based on HOL, even some simple subspace learning methods can achieve high recognition rates.

Abstract: The histogram of oriented gradients (HOG) is widely used for image description and proves to be very effective. In many vision problems, rotation-invariant analysis is necessary or preferred. Popular solutions are mainly based on pose normalization or learning, neglecting some intrinsic properties of rotations. This paper presents a method to build rotation-invariant HOG descriptors using Fourier analysis in polar/spherical coordinates, which are closely related to the irreducible representation of the 2D/3D rotation groups. This is achieved by considering a gradient histogram as a continuous angular signal which can be well represented by the Fourier basis (2D) or spherical harmonics (3D). As rotation-invariance is established in an analytical way, we can avoid discretization artifacts and create a continuous mapping from the image to the feature space. In the experiments, we first show that our method outperforms the state-of-the-art in a public dataset for a car detection task in aerial images. We further use the Princeton Shape Benchmark and the SHREC 2009 Generic Shape Benchmark to demonstrate the high performance of our method for similarity measures of 3D shapes. Finally, we show an application on microscopic volumetric data.
