TL;DR: In Echinoderms a lysozyme like activity has been found in the body wall, hemal system and respiratory trees, gonad, alimentary canal, eggs and larvae, suggesting an inhibitory role of the enzyme against exploitation by bacteria of the environment.
Abstract: In Echinoderms a lysozyme like activity has been found in the body wall, hemal system and respiratory trees, gonad, alimentary canal (Holothuria polii), eggs and larvae (Paracentrotus lividus). This ubiquitaneousness suggests an inhibitory role of the enzyme against exploitation by bacteria of the environment

TL;DR: Wang et al. as discussed by the authors investigated the bioactivities of the polysaccharides from sea cucumber H. fuscogliva using a protease hydrolysis method, which showed a strong antioxidant activity, the hydroxyl and superoxide radical scavenging activity EC50 was 3.74 and 0.037 mg/mL, respectively.
Abstract: Sea cucumber is a traditional nutritional food and medicinal resource with many bioactive components in China. Holothuria fuscogliva is a big sea cucumber with a rich of bioactive polysaccharides. To investigate the bioactivities of the polysaccharides from sea cucumber H. fuscogliva, we prepared the sulfated polysaccharides (HfP) from sea cucumber H. fuscogliva using a protease hydrolysis method. Antioxidant activities of HfP were investigated, including hydroxyl radical scavenging activity and superoxide radical scavenging activity. And, the anticoagulant activities of HfP were studied, including the activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT), prothrombin time (PT) and thrombin time (TT). The average molecular weight was 1 867.1 Da, with a sulfate content of 20.7%. In addition, the molar ratio of monosaccharide composition of HfP was Man: Rha: Glc A: Glc: Gal: Xyl: Fuc=0.083 6: 0.437: 0.134: 0:1.182: 0.748: 1. It had a strong antioxidant activity, the hydroxyl and superoxide radical scavenging activity EC50 of HfP was 3.74 and 0.037 mg/mL, respectively. It also showed a good anticoagulant activity in our study. The APTT of HfP was much higher than that of heparin sodium, and the PT and TT of HfP was close to that of heparin sodium at a low concentration. Therefore, HfP shows a good antioxidant and anticoagulant activity and it may become a potential candidate of the natural antioxidant and anticoagulant and will have a good application future in health product or medicine industry.

TL;DR: Future studies on the species richness of sea cucumbers are required in Sarawak marine waters and the molecular phylogeny of the sea cucumber in order to obtain a better understanding of the evolutionary relationships between theSea cucumbers of Malaysia.
Abstract: This study aimed at documenting species richness and distribution of sea cucumbers (Phylum Echinodermata: Class Holothuroidea) in Malaysia. Sea cucumber collections were conducted from August 2004 until November 2011 from several study sites in Peninsular Malaysia and Sabah. A total of fifty two morphospecies of sea cucumbers from four orders comprising of 12 genera were documented. Thirty eight species were recorded for Sabah, followed by 24 species for Peninsular Malaysia, and 10 species were recorded in both regions. However, nine species required further taxonomic works for their identification. Of the 15 Actinopyga species recorded, 14 species were from Sabah and one species was from Peninsular Malaysia. The order Aspidochirotida in general, and genus Holothuria in particular were the dominant taxa. Holothuria (Mertensiothuria) leucospilota (Brandt, 1835) is the dominant species in Malaysia as it was observed and documented at all collection sites. Future studies on the species richness of sea cucumbers are required in Sarawak marine waters and the molecular phylogeny of the sea cucumbers in order to obtain a better understanding of the evolutionary relationships between the sea cucumbers of Malaysia.

TL;DR: In the seas around India nearly 200 species of holothurians are known, of which about 75 species are from the shallow waters within 20 m depth, about 15 species are of commercial value.
Abstract: In the seas around India nearly 200 species of holothurians are known, of which about 75 species are from the shallow waters within 20 m depth. Of these, about 15 species are of commercial value. At present processing is restricted only to the Gulf of Mannar and Palk Bay on the mainland. Here Holothuria (Metriatyla) scabra is mainly used. The other species exploited are Holothuria (Thelothuria) spinifera and Bohadschia marmorata. Holothuria (Halodeima) atra which occurs in large numbers can also be tried. At present there is no exploitation in the Lakshadweep. In Lakshadweep, Holothuria (Microthele) nobilia which yields first grade beche-de-mer occurs in abundance followed by Bohadschia argus and Stichopus choloronotus. Exploitation is stopped in Andaman {md Nicobar Islands. Holothuria {Metriatyla) scabra and species ot Actinopyga are important from the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
