TL;DR: In this article, the surface of a workpiece which is to be plated is immersed in a plating solution of particles dispersed in a metal salt dissolved in an aqueous solution.
Abstract: The surface of a workpiece which is to be plated is immersed in a plating solution of particles dispersed in a metal salt dissolved in an aqueous solution. The plating solution flows between the surface and an abrasive tool which rubs against the surface. An electric current is passed from the tool through the plating solution into the workpiece thereby causing metal ions to plate out as metal onto the surface of the workpiece. The particles within the plating solution become entrapped in the plated out matrix material. The pressure of the abrasive tool against the surface is enough to remove surface roughness but not enough to remove all the metal that is being plated out so that the coating builds up on the surface with the particles entrapped therein. The particle size, the pressure of the tool against the workpiece and the dispersal of the particles in the plating solution are several of the parameters which are controlled to achieve a uniform, high volume percent of particles within the plated matrix material. In a preferred embodiment the abrasive tool is a honing tool which rotates and reciprocates relative to the surface of the workpiece being plated.

TL;DR: In this paper, a cylinder is made by hypereutectic Al-Si alloy whose wear surface is finished by usual honing process and the projection of the crystals is brought about by etching.
Abstract: The cylinder is made by hypereutectic Al-Si alloy whose wear surface is finished by usual honing process and the projection of the crystals is brought about by etching. The surface is not protected in any way. The piston has a similarly constituted and finished wear surface. The contact between piston and cylinder therefore takes place on the crystal surfaces, and etched recesses between the projecting crystals serve as oil reservoirs. Cylinder material may be Al-Si 17 Cu 4 Mg and piston material is pref. Si 16-26%, Cu 0.5-6% and any one of Fe, Ni, Mg, Mn, Z, Ti, alone or in combination 0.08-2.5% and Al remainder.

TL;DR: In this paper, a method of making a cavity molded type semiconductor device with an external lead frame is described, where the external frame is prepared with a liquid honing treatment prior to its being molded into a base portion after molding, and after the portion of the lead frame extending into a cavity and the mating surface of the base portion are again subjected to a liquid-enhanced treatment.
Abstract: A method of making a cavity molded type semiconductor device with an external lead frame is disclosed wherein the external lead frame is prepared with a liquid honing treatment prior to its being molded into a base portion after molding, and after molding, the portion of the lead frame extending into a cavity and the mating surface of the base portion are again subjected to a liquid honing treatment. The two liquid honing treatments serve to markedly increase the ability to prevent leakage of atmospheric air into the sealed cavity of the finished molded semiconductor device.

TL;DR: A pocket-size tool adapted for use in honing ice skate blades and embodying a cylindrical abrasive honing stone and a holder therefor is described in this article, where a sliding movement of the blade along the stone, coupled with a rocking motion, the entire hollow ground concavity may be honed.
Abstract: A pocket-size tool adapted for use in honing ice skate blades and embodying a cylindrical abrasive honing stone and a holder therefor. The radius of the honing stone is slightly less than the radius of the hollow ground curvature of the skate blade to be honed and a guide slot in the holder facilitates application of the blade to the stone so that by a sliding movement of the blade along the stone, coupled with a rocking motion, the entire hollow ground concavity may be honed. Releasable clamping means enables the honing stone to be rotated in the holder for presentation of fresh abrasive surfaces to the blade.

TL;DR: In this article, a method and apparatus for micro-finish machining of circular arc-shaped profiled surfaces in annular workpieces utilizing a honing tool was described.
Abstract: Method and apparatus for micro-finish machining of circular arc-shaped profiled surfaces in annular workpieces utilizing a honing tool. After an initial grinding operation the profiled surfaces of the workpieces are micro-finish machined using two machining phases. During the first machining phase the workpieces are rotated at a first predetermined rotational velocity and the honing tool is pressed against the profiled surfaces at a first predetermined pressure; while during the second machining phase the workpieces are rotated at a second predetermined rotational velocity and the honing tool is pressed against the profiled surfaces at a second predetermined pressure. Furthermore, the first predetermined rotational velocity is lower than the second predetermined rotational velocity while the first predetermined pressure is greater than the second predetermined pressure.

TL;DR: A parallel or taper roller bearing finishing machine has a pair of rollers which support the workpieces in the nip between them, and a honing stone, curved to match their periphery is held against their upper surface as they rotate below.
Abstract: A parallel or taper roller bearing finishing machine has a pair of rollers which support the workpieces in the nip between them, and a honing stone, curved to match their periphery is held against their upper surface as they rotate below. One roller carries a spiral collar around it, against which the workpieces are pushed. This collar is made up of separately attached segments. The rollers are shaped so as to match the contour of the workpieces and also to guide them so that different parts of their contour are finish ground and polished by the honing stones which may have correspondingly shaped contact surfaces of different stages as they travel from one end to the other.

TL;DR: In this article, a simple and efficient process is provided for producing deep, non-connected pit type, porous chromium surfaces with more constant and uniform characteristics, where a substrate is initially electroplated with an excess of chromium having predetermined physical and chemical properties, then diamond abrasive grit is honed to within a specific excess of the desired final size.
Abstract: A simple and more efficient process is provided for producing deep, non-connected pit type, porous chromium surfaces with more constant and uniform characteristics. A substrate is initially electroplated with an excess of chromium having predetermined physical and chemical properties. The chromium surface is then diamond abrasive grit honed to within a specific excess of the desired final size, followed by D.C. reverse etching at a predetermined rate of ampere minutes per square inch, and finally honed with conventional type abrasive honing stones to a desired bearing surface. Under magnification, the resulting surface reveals a specific type and degree or percentage of plateaus and depressions, herein called porosity and a specific depth of pits. Simultaneously, with the surface treatment, the chromium plated product is obtained within a required size or dimension.

TL;DR: In this article, a base metal, such as the aluminum or iron housing of a conventional rotary or reciprocating-piston internal combustion engine, and a sealing member applicable to the pistons or rotor thereof are coated with a layer of a wear-resistant alloy, either by evaporating the elements of the alloy be electron guns onto the surfaces to be coated or by vaporizing a wire of the same alloy in a vacuum chamber by the application of a high-tension electrical discharge through the wire from an electrical condenser bank.
Abstract: A base metal, such as the aluminum or iron housing of a conventional rotary or reciprocating-piston internal combustion engine, and a sealing member applicable to the pistons or rotor thereof are coated with a layer of a wear-resistant alloy, such as molybdenum-ruthenium or tungsten-ruthenium alloy, either by evaporating the elements of the alloy be electron guns onto the surfaces to be coated or by vaporizing a wire of the same alloy in a vacuum chamber by the application of a high-tension electrical discharge through the wire from an electrical condenser bank. Depositing the alloy is done on a production basis by passing workpiece holders in a circular path through a vacuum chamber beneath the electron guns, followed by a realloying step through a laser beam, an acid dip, a rinsing dip, a drying by heat, and a final honing.

TL;DR: A measuring device for a machine tool, particularly a honing machine, which hones cylindrical surfaces in which the measuring device comprises a body concentric with the surface and have resilient fingers extending axially toward the surface with feeler elements on the free ends is described in this article.
Abstract: A measuring device for a machine tool, particularly a honing machine, which hones cylindrical surfaces in which the measuring device comprises a body concentric with the surface and have resilient fingers extending axially toward the surface with feeler elements on the free ends. The feeler elements have inclined ramps on the sides facing the surface and are pressed against the workpiece at the end of the surface. When the surface is machined to the proper size, the feeler elements move on to the surface and a switch is actuated to halt the machining operation. The feeler elements are moved axially toward the surface together with the tool and are halted at the surface and are then biased with the predetermined force against the end of the workpiece by a fluid pressure device.
