TL;DR: In this article, the graphite content of the bond was found to be from 34 to 45 volume percent for dry grinding and from 10 to 53% for grinding wheels, depending on the total bond solids, including graphite.
Abstract: Ceramic bonded grinding and honing tools employing diamond or cubic boron nitride abrasive particles are improved by the inclusion of from 10 to 53%, by volume, of graphite in the bond, based on the total bond solids, including graphite. The bond must have a porosity volume less than 15% for honing applications and less than 10% for grinding wheels, preferably the graphite should be finely particulate. Applications in dry grinding and honing of hard materials are described. For dry grinding the optimum graphite content of the bond is from 34 to 45 volume percent. The bond may include crystalline filler such as alumina, zirconia, silicon carbide, or crystalline filler formed in situ by devitrification; and the abrasive particles may be metal coated. MoS 2 or hexagonal boron nitride may substitute for all or part of the graphite and metal powders may be employed to replace up to 50% by volume of the graphite or graphite substitute materials.

TL;DR: In this paper, the inner cylindrical wall of an engine cylinder or cylinder liners is fine-tuned for rotation and oscillation in contact with the inner cylinder walls.
Abstract: The honing of the inner cylindrical wall of engine cylinders or cylinder liners. Coarse honing of an inner cylindrical wall of a cylinder or cylinder liner allows more oil to remain in scratches in the wall after the piston rings pass a particular point on the wall than if the wall is fine honed. The more oil that remains in the scratches the more oil there is to burn during the expansion stroke of the piston. It is desirable to provide a relatively coarse finish (24) at one end (18) of an inner cylindrical wall (12) of a cylinder or a cylinder liner (13) and a relatively finer finish (26) towards another end (20) of said inner cylinder wall (12). A honing member (14) is provided for rotation and oscillation in contact with the inner cylinder walls (12). A first section (16) of the honing member has a relatively coarse grit surface (24) and a second section (22) of the honing member (14) has a relatively fine grit surface (26). The above mentioned oscillation and rotation of such a honing member (14) comprises an improved method for honing a cylindrical wall (12).

TL;DR: In this paper, a measuring unit mounted on the honing meachine measures the bores in the workpieces before these come under the tool and feeds the measured values to the control arrangement which adjusts the dia. of the tool for each workpiece.
Abstract: Workpieces (11) move step by step through the honing machine. The bores (13) of the workpieces are finished by a honing tool (14). The honing stones (16) on the tool can be spread by a mechanism which is drive by an electric motor or electro-hydraulically. The spreading mechanism can vary the dia. of the honing tool by initial fast continuous adjustment followed by slow step by step adjustment. A measuring unit (19) mounted on the honing meachine measures the bores in the workpieces before these come under the honing tool. The unit incorporates a spindle (20) which can be fed into the bore in the workpiece. The spindle measures the bore in the workpiece either by peeumatic, electronic or mechanical means. If the bore is conical it will measure the smallest dia. The measuring unit feeds the measured values to the control arrangement which adjusts the dia. of the honing tool for each workpiece.

TL;DR: In this article, the first and second plaques are mounted in slots which are at an angle of 45° with the longitudinal axis of the tool, such that the plaques alternately move back and forth transversely with respect to the tool as the direction of travel of the tools changes.
Abstract: Apparatus and method for honing internal surfaces of a workpiece wherein at least one of the surfaces to be honed is a flat or non-circular aperture. Movable honing stones are mounted in a holding tool such that they can move back and forth transversely of the honing tool as the honing tool is moved longitudinally of the surface to be honed. A first series of honing stones is mounted in a series of parallel slots formed in the honing tool at an angle such that when the tool moves in a first longitudinal direction the honing stones will move to one side of the tool due to reaction forces and due to the angle at which the mounting slots are formed in the tool. A second series of honing stones is mounted in a second plurality of parallel slots formed in the tool such that they move transversely in a direction opposite to the first plurality of stones when the tool is moved in a first longitudinal direction. The result is that the first and second plurality of stones alternately move back and forth transversely with respect to the tool as the direction of travel of the tool changes resulting in a very precise and effective honing operation as well as providing that the tools are self-cleaning. In a preferable arrangement the first and second plurality of stones are mounted in slots which are at an angle of 45° with the longitudinal axis of the tool.

TL;DR: An instrument and tool honing mechanism in which a gear rack is mounted on and movable with a reciprocable bar, and a spindle having a pinion thereon is supported by a fixture in a transverse relationship to said bar with the pinion in engagement with the gear rack.
Abstract: An instrument and tool honing mechanism in which a gear rack is mounted on and movable with a reciprocable bar, and a spindle having a pinion thereon is supported by a fixture in a transverse relationship to said bar with the pinion in engagement with the gear rack. A honing element is mounted on the spindle, and when the bar reciprocates, the rack creates a reciprocating movement in the spindle, and hence rotates the honing element on the spindle. The mechanism is preferably constructed as an attachment for a honing machine, and is capable of being readily mounted on and removed from the machine. The fixture preferably is pivoted to the rear of the reciprocable bar for angular movement from a position substantially horizontal to an elevated position where the pinion is disengaged from the gear rack. The honing element may be spherical or cylindrical shaped, and is normally mounted on a forwardly projecting end of the spindle where it can easily be used to recondition instruments and tools of the type normally used by dentists and doctors.
