TL;DR: A flexible abrasive rotary tool includes a hub adapted to be driven for rotation as discussed by the authors, which projects radially outwardly and then circumferentially away from the intended direction of rotation of the tool in the general form of a spiral.
Abstract: A flexible abrasive rotary tool includes a hub adapted to be driven for rotation. Secured to the hub are discrete bristle tufts of stiff yet flexible abrasive loaded plastic monofilaments which project radially outwardly and then circumferentially away from the intended direction of rotation of the tool in the general form of a spiral so that the filaments of the distal end of each tuft extend generally circumferentially and overlies the filaments of the next adjacent tuft. The outer end of each tuft is resiliently radially supported by such adjacent tufts. The bristle monofilaments are preferably nylon and loaded with about forty-five percent of abrasive material and have a rectangular or somewhat oval sectional configuration so that the wider side of the monofilament forms the tool face. The tool has a number of applications but is particularly adapted to be circumferentially compressed into a bore or cylinder, such as that of an internal combustion engine. The rotary tool also deburrs and properly finishes the edges of any ports such as cylinder ports. The invention includes not only the method of finishing or honing such surfaces but also the method of making the tool and replacement tufts.

TL;DR: In this paper, the innermost turn of a spirally wound spring and coil is held by a gripping surface over most of the inner most turn of the spiral wound spring, and the workpiece is grasped circumferentially over its outer surface without excess contact pressure at any particular point.
Abstract: An apparatus and method are disclosed for holding a generally cylindrical workpiece for honing or otherwise machining an internal bore. The workpiece is held by a gripping surface over most of the innermost turn of a spirally wound spring and coil. The workpiece is grasped circumferentially over its outer surface without excess contact pressure at any particular point. A tendency of the machining operation to rotate the workpiece serves to secure the workpiece more tightly in position by tightening the outer turns of the spring band coil. A rotatable tensioning member acts under the influence of a biasing spring to decrease the diameter of the innermost turn of the spring band coil to bring the gripping surface into contact with the workpiece. A method for adapting the work-holding apparatus to smaller or inrregularly shaped workpieces consists of molding an annular piece around the workpiece. The molded annular piece has an adhesive layer impregnated with an abrasive grit to grip the outer circumference of the workpiece. An alternative embodiment of the apparatus comprises an annular housing into which a removable cartridge holding a spring band coil can be inserted and fixed in position. A series of cartridges, each employing a different size of spring band coil, provides a work-holding apparatus that can be used with a wide range of workpiece diameters.

TL;DR: An apparatus for superfinishing of the surfaces of conical rollers contains two rolls (11, 26) driven in the same direction, one of which is equipped with a transporting collar as mentioned in this paper.
Abstract: An apparatus for the superfinishing of the surfaces of conical rollers contains two rolls (11, 26) driven in the same direction, one of which is equipped with a transporting collar. The conical rollers are transported in the longitudinal direction of the apparatus between said rolls and at the same time turn about their own axis. During this, in the region of the upper side, a working of the surface by means of honing stones is effected. According to the invention, the apparatus has, in its end region, a region in which no relative movement occurs in the longitudinal direction of the apparatus between the honing stones and the conical rollers to be worked. As a result of this recess region, there is a considerable improvement in the roundness of the conical rollers.

TL;DR: In this paper, a torsion-carrying spring band coil is mounted at one end of a handle for use in a work-holding implement for machining the inner surface of a bore.
Abstract: A work-holding implement for use in honing or otherwise machining the inner surface of a bore in a workpiece comprises a torsion-carrying spring band coil mounted at one end of a handle Most of the inwardly exposed surface of the innermost turn of the coil is a gripping surface, while the remaining turns in the coil have smooth bearing surfaces A workpiece is gripped by the innermost turn, and as an interior bore in the workpiece is being honed or otherwise machined, rotational torques exerted on the workpiece by the machine tool cause the coil to become more tightly wound around the workpiece As the workpiece is being worked on, the tightened coil bears against a planar segment of the spring band forming part of the implement and deforms it into a curved surface conforming to the workpiece surface over which contact is made Two control guides serve to keep the turns of the coil in alignment for proper pressure distribution of the innermost coil in its contact with the outer circumference of the workpiece A loading fixture for use in conjunction with the work-holding implement allows quick and easy insertion and removal of a workpiece with safe and sure frictional engagement of the workpiece

TL;DR: In this article, the graphite clusters present in the structure remain intact and a surface free of metal scales is obtained by the combined high-pressure blasting and brush treatment, which is simple to carry out with the tool.
Abstract: 2.1 During the honing of, for example, the working surfaces of pistons, the material structure is deformed in the area of the edge zone. Following the honing, the working surface is retreated in a blasting unit with a liquid jet under high pressure. The requisite blasting pressure already leads to destruction of the graphite clusters embedded in the structure, as a result of which an optimum working surface cannot be obtained in the production run. … 2.2 In order to provide a surface free of metal scales, but with the graphite clusters embedded in the structure not being destroyed or dissolved away, the surface (6) is brushed in addition to the honing and high-pressure blasting treatment. To carry out this method, a tool (3a) is provided which has a tool part, such as honing sticks and/or brush sticks (15), and in addition at least one blasting device (13). A surface free of metal scales is obtained by the combined high-pressure blasting and brush treatment. … 2.3 The invention ensures that the graphite clusters present in the structure remain intact.
