TL;DR: In this paper, a method and an apparatus for fine-working or microfinishing of workpiece surfaces, particularly rotationally-symmetrically moved workpieces with oscillating or rotating tools such as honing stones or fine polishing stones, which are infed against the workpiece was described.
Abstract: The invention relates to a method and an apparatus for fine-working or microfinishing of workpiece surfaces, particularly rotationally-symmetrically moved workpieces (38) with oscillating or rotating tools such as honing stones (18) or fine polishing stones, which are infed against the workpiece (38). Dependent on a measured parameter proportional to the machining force, the tool infeed is controlled such that a continuous workpiece material remove with constant removal speed is achieved. The reaction force is measured at any point in the flux of force to determine the machining force.

Abstract: Pressure with which working parts of the honing tool are pressed against the bore wall is controlled during machining. The pressure per unit area of the working parts can thereby be kept constant or specifically varied, irrespective of the surface configuration of the bore wall. For this purpose, the honing machine includes a feed mechanism and electronic control device for predetermining the pressure of the working parts against the bore.

TL;DR: In this article, a flexibly mounted honing stone is used to seat itself on the flat surface of the workpiece to be treated. Butler et al. present an apparatus that can also be moved in a direction which is substantially orthogonal to the two axes.
Abstract: An apparatus (10) for honing workpieces such as the midspans (108) of jet aircraft engine blades (12) is provided. The apparatus includes a flexibly mounted honing stone (24) which will seat itself on the flat surface of the workpiece to be treated. To provide the necessary flexibility, the honing stone is mounted to a support (20) in such a manner that it is pivotable about at least two axes. It may also be moved in a direction which is substantially orthogonal to the two axes. This latter feature allows the stone to move downwardly as the surface of the work piece is honed. It also allows the honing stone to be moved entirely off the work piece and into a storage position. The apparatus further includes a support (14,16,18) which is specifically designed for holding an aircraft blade in a position such that the wear surfaces of the midspans of such blades are in a substantially horizontal plane. Two clamping assemblies are provided for clamping the root (16) and one of the midspans of a blade (18).

TL;DR: In this article, a method for machining workpieces, in which the bores to be machined have different nominal sizes, uses a honing tool with a large adjustment range, and compensation for the abrasion of the honing surface is carried out by altering a feed starting point.
Abstract: A method for machining workpieces, in which the bores to be machined have different nominal sizes, uses a honing tool with a large adjustment range. For each tool with a specified nominal bore size, the tool is set, before machining begins, to a specified starting size, from which the feed takes place. At regular intervals, compensation for the abrasion of the honing surface is carried out by altering a feed starting point. When changing to workpieces of different nominal bore size, an adjustment is likewise made to the compensated starting size.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors proposed a method to obtain a preferable cutting surface without the separation of a coating layer so as to prolong the service life by a method wherein the honing length of a flank is set to be larger than that of a rake face.
Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain a preferable cutting surface without the separation of a coating layer so as to prolong the service life by a method wherein the honing length of a flank is set to be larger than that of a rake face, that is, the former is 0.02 to 0.15mm and the latter is 0.01 to 0.10mm. CONSTITUTION:A base material 10 is coated with a coating layer 11 of TiN or the like and the honing length 13 of a flank face 12 and the honing length 15 of a rake face 14 are set at 0.02 to 0.15mm and 0.01 to 0.10mm, respectively, thus suppressing chuttering of a tool at the minimum. Further, the honing length 13 is set to be larger than the honing length 15 so that, in the cutting operation, the force F is applied from the outside not only on the coating layer 11 but also on the whole cutting edge containing the base material 10, thus preventing micro-chipping and the micro-separation of the coating layer 10. Accordingly, it is possible to perform a stable cutting operation for a long period and thus obtain the preferable cutting surface without any streak on the surface of the workpiece.
