TL;DR: In this paper, the cumulative distribution plot on a normal probability graph is used to characterize the texture of a plateau-enhanced cylinder liners for internal combustion engines, and an alternate approach is proposed based on analyzing the cumulative distributions of the normal probability graphs.
Abstract: The plateau honing operation is being widely used for finishing of cylinder liners for internal combustion engines Plateau honing has been shown to significantly reduce the costly running-in period due to the fact that very little further modification of the texture is required once the liner is put into operation In order to better understand, control, and ultimately “engineer” plateau honed surfaces, a comprehensive means of characterizing this texture is required In this paper the techniques currently used are briefly reviewed and an alternate approach is proposed The proposed approach is based on analyzing the cumulative distribution plot on a normal probability graph

TL;DR: In this article, a method for finishing surfaces of workpieces includes a honing process with at least two method steps, one for the inner wall of a bore, and the other for crossing grooves in the surface.
Abstract: A method for finishing surfaces of workpieces includes a honing process with at least two method steps. In one of the method steps the surface, for example, the inner wall of a bore, is honed to a predetermined final dimension whereby a very fine structure with minimal depth of honing traces is generated so that a great portion of the surface functions as the supporting surface. In a further method step, which can be performed before or after the finishing-honing step, crossed grooves are provided in the surface by subjecting the surface to a stream of a medium, especially a laser, whereby the pattern of the grooves provides a lubricant reservoir for the future use of the workpiece. The treatment with a stream of a medium does not cause deformations at the edges of the grooves. This ensures an optimal distribution of the lubricant.

TL;DR: In this paper, an elastomer is injected into the mold to infuse and encapsulate the bundle, filling the interstices of the bundle and forming an integument around the bundle in effect making the tip action tool into a solid yet elastic block.
Abstract: Honing tools and methods of making such tools utilize a compact bundle of abrasive containing plastic monofilaments projection a relatively short distance from a holder with the compacted tips forming the working face of the tool. The bundle may be secured to the holder by a thin layer of adhesive or by a clinched or swaged girdling lip or rim on the holder which embraces the bundle. In addition, the bundle is further infused with an elastomer, preferably foamed. The bundle is enclosed in a mold which may be part of the clinching process and an elastomer is injected into the mold to infuse and encapsulate the bundle. The encapsulation fills the interstices of the bundle and form an integument around the bundle in effect making the tip action tool into a solid yet elastic block. This enables the abrasive monofilaments to have a higher abrasive loading since they are additionally supported by the matrix, and the tool to be applied at higher pressures. The matrix may be injected through the working face, the bottom of the holder or through mechanical anchor holes in the sides of the holder.

TL;DR: In this article, a tubular abrasive sleeve member is retained coaxially within a modular tubular honing assembly having an opening or passageway extending the entire length therethrough adaptable for insertably receiving an elongated expander member positioned for axial movement there within.
Abstract: A honing tool or mandrel mountable for rotation on a honing machine comprising a tubular abrasive sleeve member retained coaxially within a modular tubular honing assembly having an opening or passageway extending the entire length therethrough adaptable for insertably receiving an elongated expander member positioned for axial movement therewithin. The modular tubular honing assembly includes a drive member for attaching to a typical honing machine, a cage member adaptable for slidably receiving the abrasive sleeve member, and a retainer member for holding the abrasive sleeve member in operative position within the cage member. The abrasive sleeve member has inner and outer surfaces, the inner surface being conically tapered over its entire length while its outer surface includes a plurality of circumferentially spaced longitudinal projections positioned adjacent longitudinal channels, each projection including a honing surface having abrasive particles located thereon. The abrasive sleeve member also includes an elongated slot extending along its entire length on one side thereof which enables such member to uniformly radially expand and contract when the expander member is axially moved therethrough, the expander member having at least a portion of its outer surface which extends through the abrasive sleeve member likewise tapered at the same conical taper rate as the taper associated with the inner surface of the abrasive sleeve member for making surface-to-surface contact with the tapered inner surface of the abrasive sleeve member. Axial movement of the expander member within the abrasive sleeve member changes the diameter of the sleeve member uniformly along its entire length during a honing operation.

TL;DR: In this paper, an internal gear with abrasive teeth was used to remove metal from the workpiece gear during rotation, and the spindle drives of the work piece gear and the honing tool were electronically coupled.
Abstract: The gear (1) to be finished is rotated in mesh with the honing tool (3) which is in the form of an internal gear with abrasive teeth which remove metal from the workpiece gear during rotation. The spindle drives of the workpiece gear and the honing tool are electronically coupled. Before machining takes place, the honing tool is rotated in mesh with the workpiece gear, which is allowed to rotate freely under no load. The deviations from true angular displacement of the workpiece gear are registered by the control system. The electronic coupling is then engaged and during machining uses the stored information on the gear errors to modify the relative speeds in a way that varies the metal removal rate and corrects the overall pitch error of the gear. USE/ADVANTAGE - High gear quality. Short machining time. Suitable for high volume production.

TL;DR: In this paper, an excimer laser is used to irradiate the surface with a contact free, optical process that seals the surface by simultaneous smoothing and reduction in surface porosity.
Abstract: In ceramics processing, the final machining steps for surface loaded devices have until now been mechanical in nature. Techniques such as turning or grinding, followed by finishing, lapping, honing, or polishing, are usually sufficient to produce the desired surface roughness. The lifetime of a ceramic component is in most cases determined by its surface features. Crack initiation often occurs at machining marks because the stress intensity factor of such defects results in higher stresses in the surface on loading. If these stresses exceed the material's strength, failure of the workpiece will occur. Depending on the actual conditions in service, various combinations of surface properties, e.g. roughness, coefficient of friction, or the absence of porosity, are required. Irradiating the surface with an excimer laser is a contact free, optical process that seals the surface with simultaneous smoothing and reduction in surface porosity. Results for laser treated alumina samples of different puriti...

TL;DR: In this paper, a process for producing conical bores on a work piece by means of a tool with a central carrying body is described, which is arranged on the spindle of a honing machine.
Abstract: of EP0569926A process for producing conical bores on a work piece by means of a honing tool (1) which has a central carrying body (2) and is arranged, by means of said body, on the spindle (41) of a honing machine. Said process makes possible the production of continuously smooth cone surfaces by the honing surfaces being guided, essentially on spiral paths, in accordance with the predetermined cone inclination until the predetermined cone profile has been achieved. The average cutting speed is held at an essentially constant value by a computer-aided control of the displacement speed, of the speed of widening in the radial direction and the circumferential speed. A honing tool which is particularly suitable for carrying out the process has, distributed symmetrically on the carrying body (2), segments (5) which are mounted such that they can pivot in radial planes, carry radially outwardly pointing honing elements (20) and the pivoting movement of which can be controlled by means of a widening device (21). As drive of the widening device (21) there is provided a push rod (48), extending through the honing spindle (41), designed as hollow shafts, and drive rod (42), with a circulating-ball-screw mounting (50) in the region of the drive by an electric motor (56) and a reduction gear mechanism (52).

TL;DR: In this paper, a rotary bearing with three rotary rollers arranged along the periphery of an inner tooth gear form grinding wheel at equal intervals was used to process accurately while rotating at high speed as the driving side to a gear to be processed.
Abstract: PURPOSE:To process accurately while rotating at a high speed as the driving side to a gear to be processed, by forming a rotary bearing with three rotary rollers arranged along the periphery of an inner tooth gear form grinding wheel at equal intervals. CONSTITUTION:When a gear to be processed W is driven to rotate through a driving motor 6, a grinding wheel body 13 is also rotated together with the rotation of the gear to be processed W. By the sliding between the gear face of the gear to be processed W and the gear face of a grinding wheel 16 in the relative rotation, a honing process is carried out. Since the gear to be processed W whose diameter is smaller than that of the grinding wheel body 13 is rotated by the driving motor 6 in this case, the rotation is carried out at a speed higher than the conventional device, so as to improve the machining capacity. And by a rotary bearing which consists of three rotary rollers 17, the rotating friction is reduced, and the grinding can be finished accurately without generating an unvalance of the gringing amount. Furthermore, the engaging part of the grinding wheel body 13 and the machined gear W is positioned at the central part of two rollers 17, in this case, and the basic function as a bearing is increased.
