TL;DR: A diamond-like coating on the entire contact bearing surface and the recesses aids in reducing wear and the stiction of the smooth surfaces to the disc that is being burnished as mentioned in this paper.
Abstract: A honing head for microburnishing surface of a recording/reproducing disc to a smoothness at which asperities are limited to submicron heights including a hardened contact bearing surface having an array of depressions with abrupt trailing edges interconnected by recessed channels leading outwardly from the honing head. The array of channels span a band in which an asperity may be present, and the sharp edges shear off the asperities within the band which extend above the chosen submicroinch height, with the separated particulates being passed through the recesses and channel system to the outer edge of the honing head. The trailing edges act to shear off the unwanted heights of the asperities, while the recesses enable pressure differentials and air flows to direct the separated particulates outwardly relative to the disc, centripetal forces of rotation bearing the particulates from the disc. A diamond-like coating on the entire contact bearing surface and the recesses aids in reducing wear and the stiction of the smooth surfaces to the disc that is being burnished. This arrangement has the further advantage that the honing head may be prepared by photomicrolithographic techniques to generate the array of recesses on a production basis, with the recesses having precisely determined depths and perpendicular trailing edge walls. Ion milling and other known techniques can be used to remove the materials in the chose patterns quickly and efficiently.

TL;DR: In this paper, an expeditious numerical procedure to calculate the Stokes flow in a corner due to the rotation of a scraping circular boundary is presented. But the method is also applicable to other wedge geometries.
Abstract: In this paper we outline an expeditious numerical procedure to calculate the Stokes flow in a corner due to the rotation of a scraping circular boundary. The method is also applicable to other wedge geometries. We employ a collocation technique utilising a basis of eddy (similarity) functions introduced by Moffatt (1964) that allows us to satisfy automatically the governing equations for the streamfunction and all the boundary conditions on the surface of the wedge. The circular honing problem thereby becomes one-dimensional requiring only the satisfaction of conditions on the circular boundary. The advantage of using the Moffatt eddy functions as a basis in wedge geometry is clear and the technique greatly reduces many of the concerns with accuracy and time expenditure associated with alternative numerical methods. An investigation of the details of the eddy structure for our particular geometry is presented.

TL;DR: In this article, an internal gear with abrasive teeth was used to remove metal from the workpiece gear during rotation, and the spindle drives of the work piece gear and the honing tool were coupled.
Abstract: of EP0631211The gear (1) to be finished is rotated in mesh with the honing tool (3) which is in the form of an internal gear with abrasive teeth which remove metal from the workpiece gear during rotation. The spindle drives of the workpiece gear and the honing tool are electronically coupled. Before machining takes place, the honing tool is rotated in mesh with the workpiece gear, which is allowed to rotate freely under no load. The deviations from true angular displacement of the workpiece gear are registered by the control system. The electronic coupling is then engaged and during machining uses the stored information on the gear errors to modify the relative speeds in a way that varies the metal removal rate and corrects the overall pitch error of the gear.
