TL;DR: In this article, the effects of key process parameters in controlling the surface micro-profile and correcting out-of-roundness (OR) in the electro-chemical honing of internal cylinders are investigated.
Abstract: Hybrid machining processes (HMPs) are gaining considerable attention from the manufacturing community in order to meet the challenges of stringent surface quality and tolerance requirements, often coupled with high production rates. This paper presents the experimental findings on the effects of key process parameters in controlling the surface micro-profile and correcting out-of-roundness (OR) in the electro-chemical honing (ECH) of internal cylinders. The results indicate that the current intensity, electrolyte concentration, segment out-pressure and segment grit size are the major contributing factors. A nano-finished surface featured with high uniformity of roughness values can be generated with precisely controlled out-of-roundness if a distinct co-ordination of electrolytic dissolution and mechanical abrading is achieved in ECH. Some key features of the indigenously developed ECH setup are also highlighted.

TL;DR: In this paper, a taguchi loss function-based hybrid strategy for the multi-performance optimization of ECH process is presented. But, the proposed strategy utilizes a radial basis function neural network (RBFNN) for the process parametric mapping with the loss functions of electrochemical machining and conventional honing actions in a single operation.
Abstract: Electro-chemical honing (ECH) is a unique hybrid electrolytic precision micro-finishing technology that combines electro-chemical machining and conventional honing actions in a single operation to provide simultaneously controlled functional surface-generation and fast material removal capabilities. This paper presents a Taguchi loss function-based hybrid strategy for the multi-performance optimization of ECH process. The proposed strategy utilizes a radial basis function neural network (RBFNN) for the process parametric mapping with the loss functions of ECH multi-performance characteristics determined through a Taguchi matrix robust experimental design. The network outputs are then unified using desirability function (DF) approach to provide an objective function to genetic algorithm (GA). Finally, GA predicts the optimal process parametric settings for multi-performance optimization of ECH. Simulated results confirm the feasibility of the strategy and show good close agreement with actual experimental results over a wide range of machining conditions employed in the process.

TL;DR: In this article, a closed-loop system combining the advantages of chemical-free advanced decontamination technology, long-life wiper-free UV disinfections, and maintenance-free ceramic MF/UF membranes to provide multi- barrier protection is presented.
Abstract: Disclosed herein are systems and methods for decontaminating a contaminated fluid that integrate ultraviolet radiation in an advanced decontamination process, and a honing material, along with a cross-flow membrane filter, into a single closed-loop system. This approach combines the advantages of chemical-free advanced decontamination technology, long-life wiper-free UV disinfections, and maintenance-free ceramic MF/UF membranes to provide multi- barrier protection. Such technique provides a 100% fluid recovery system (zero reject stream). In one embodiment, the system comprises a filtration membrane and a honing material located in the contaminated fluid that is sufficient to scrub foulants from the membrane, as well as any other components that honing material comes in contact with, while forming a dynamic filtration coating on the membrane as the contaminated fluid pass through the membrane. The system may also comprise an advanced decontamination process sufficient to destroy, by oxidation or reduction, biological and organic contaminants from the contaminated fluid.

TL;DR: In this paper, a simple testing method for mechanical properties of materials in high-pressure hydrogen environments has been developed, which does not require any high pressure vessel but the high pressure hydrogen environment is produced inside the hole in the specimen.
Abstract: A simple testing method for mechanical properties of materials in high-pressure hydrogen environments has been developed. This method does not require any high-pressure vessel but the high-pressure hydrogen environment is produced inside the hole in the specimen. The specimen temperature is easily controlled by outside environment. The effects of hydrogen environment embrittlement (HEE) for SUS304 and 304L at 298, 190, and 77 K were evaluated by the ratio of reduction of area obtained in tensile tests in hydrogen to that obtained in helium. The results of the evaluation by this testing method agreed fairly well with the results by the usual method using a high pressure vessel. The hole in the specimen was machined by electric discharge, wire-cut, and honing. The influence of surface roughness on HEE was compared among these processes and the wire-cut machining was found to be enough for this new method. Changes of HEE with temperature and fracture surface by hydrogen proved the usefulness of this new simple method.

TL;DR: The results show that the dominant frequency in the power spectrum is very sensitive to honing tool conditions and a good correlation exists with honed surface quality, therefore, AE signals can be used for ascertaining the Honing tool performance and establishing the end of tool life.
Abstract: Sensing Acoustic Emission (AE) signals from a machining process is one of the most promising methods suitable for tool condition monitoring because of its sensitivity combined with quick and high frequency response. In this work, AE signals are monitored during rough, finish and plateau honing of cylinder liner using fresh and completely worn out honing tools. AE parameters such as Root Mean Square (RMS), peak to peak, skewness and kurtosis and dominant frequency in the power spectrum are analysed. The results show that the dominant frequency in the power spectrum is very sensitive to honing tool conditions and a good correlation exists with honed surface quality. Therefore, AE signals can be used for ascertaining the honing tool performance and establishing the end of tool life.

Then, a honing of an inner surface of the processing hole is performed by inserting the honing head within a processing hole (W1) of a workpiece (W) moving the grinder towards an outer side of a diametrical direction by the expansion member installed within the honing head to rotate the honing head. The honing is completed when the amount of the expanding movement of the grinder reaches a target expansion amount established by the master gauge.

TL;DR: In this paper, a CBN end mill is designed such that its peripheral cutting edge 18 is inclined at a twist angle λ (=-3° to -18°) from the axis O in such a manner as twisting in the direction opposite the rotating direction in machining viewed from the shank 12s side, so that the rake angle in the axial direction in the corner part 24 at the tip of the peripheral cut edge 18 in the AXial direction becomes negative (the same as the twist angle), which allows enhancing the strength of the cutter tip.
Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a CBN end mill in which the strength of the cutter tip is increased while a prescribed sharpness in cutting is secured, capable of enhancing processing conditions including cut in depth, feeding speed, etc. SOLUTION: The CBN end mill is structured so that its peripheral cutting edge 18 is inclined at a twist angle λ (=-3° to -18°) from the axis O in such a manner as twisting in the direction opposite the rotating direction in machining viewed from the shank 12s side, so that the rake angle in the axial direction in the corner part 24 at the tip of the peripheral cutting edge 18 in the axial direction becomes negative (the same as the twist angle λ), which allows enhancing the strength of the cutter tip owing to increase of the cutter tip angle and suppressing chipping of the cutting edge. If chipping is suppressed as described, there is no need to round the cutter tip by a chamfering process such as lapping, honing, etc., it is possible to stabilize the machining performance, secure the prescribed sharpness in cutting, enhance the strength of the cutter tip, and also enhance the processing efficiency by heightening the processing conditions including cut in depth, feeding speed, etc. COPYRIGHT: (C)2008,JPO&INPIT
