TL;DR: In this paper, the transfer of these honing technologies to large high and medium speed engines is best achieved using new machining concepts, such as optimised surfaces made possible using the most modern homogeneous homogeneous surfaces.
Abstract: As well as new combustion processes and aftertreatment, increasingly rigorous environmental protection regulations are also promoting advances in engine manufacturing techniques. These measures include optimised surfaces made possible using the most modern honing technologies, such as those already in widespread use in the manufacture of automotive engines. The transfer of these honing technologies to large high and medium speed engines is best achieved using new machining concepts.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors present a metaphor for the grinding, honing, or ABRASIVE finishing of bearers' rings in which a TURRET or MAGAZINE is provided with a plurality of ANGULARly EQUISPACED outwardly open pockets.
Abstract: AN APPARATUS FOR THE GRINDING, HONING OR ABRASIVE FINISHING OF BEARING RINGS IN WHICH A TURRET OR MAGAZINE IS PROVIDED WITH A PLURALITY OF ANGULARLY EQUISPACED OUTWARDLY OPEN POCKETS. THE WORKPIECE ARE FED TO THE POCKETS IN SUCCESSION AND ARE SWUNG BY THE TURRET DISK INTO AT LEAST TWO WORKING POSITIONS BEFORE BEING RELEASED AT A DISCHARGE STATION. EACH OF THE WORKING STATIONS INCLUDES A DRIVE SPINDLE ADAPTED TO BEAR AGAINST ONE FACE OF THE WORKPIECE WHILE THE OTHER FACE THEREOF IS ENGAGED BY A FREELY ROTATING SLEEVE COMBINED WITH A FLUID-CENTERING ARRANGEMENT WHICH IS AXIALLY THRUST INTO THE INTERIOR OF THE RING-SHAPED BODY. A SHAPING TOOL ENGAGES THE OUTER PERIPHERY OF THE RING.

TL;DR: In this article, a plating layer is formed on at least the whole of the honing surface on an aluminum-made plating cylinder block, provided with a cylinder bore 2 penetrating in a vertical direction.
Abstract: PURPOSE: To make no step difference on a part (a honing surface) with which a piston can make sliding contact in a cylinder bore. CONSTITUTION: In an aluminum-made plating cylinder block 1 provided with a cylinder bore 2 penetrating in a vertical direction, a honing surface 2a on which honing work is carried out in the inner wall of the cylinder bore 2 and a honing release surface 2b having a diameter larger than that of the honing surface 2a, are formed, and a plating layer is formed on at least the whole of the honing surface 2a.

TL;DR: In this article, a device for honing or lapping cutting tools, cutlery, small machine parts, and other surfaces is described, and the object is to provide a generally improved and more satisfactory device useful as a hone and lap.
Abstract: This invention relates to a device for honing or lapping cutting tools, cutlery, small machine parts, and other surfaces. An object of the invention is the provision of a generally improved and more satisfactory device useful as a hone and lap. Another object is the provision of a device...

TL;DR: In this paper, an excimer laser is used to irradiate the surface with a contact free, optical process that seals the surface by simultaneous smoothing and reduction in surface porosity.
Abstract: In ceramics processing, the final machining steps for surface loaded devices have until now been mechanical in nature. Techniques such as turning or grinding, followed by finishing, lapping, honing, or polishing, are usually sufficient to produce the desired surface roughness. The lifetime of a ceramic component is in most cases determined by its surface features. Crack initiation often occurs at machining marks because the stress intensity factor of such defects results in higher stresses in the surface on loading. If these stresses exceed the material's strength, failure of the workpiece will occur. Depending on the actual conditions in service, various combinations of surface properties, e.g. roughness, coefficient of friction, or the absence of porosity, are required. Irradiating the surface with an excimer laser is a contact free, optical process that seals the surface with simultaneous smoothing and reduction in surface porosity. Results for laser treated alumina samples of different puriti...
