TL;DR: In this article, an elongated substantially tubular member having inner and outer surfaces, the inner surface being conically tapered over substantially the length of the member, the outer surface including a portion having abrasive particles thereon, an extended expander member positioned extending through the tubular members and having an outer surface tapered for making surface-to-surface contact with the tapered inner surface of the tube, the expander members being axially movable within the tubulae member to change the diameter thereof uniformly along its length, the tubeular member being attachable
Abstract: A honing tool or mandrel mountable for rotation on a honing machine comprising an elongated substantially tubular member having inner and outer surfaces, the inner surface being conically tapered over substantially the length thereof, the outer surface including a portion having abrasive particles thereon, an elongated expander member positioned extending through the tubular member and having an outer surface tapered for making surface-to-surface contact with the tapered inner surface of the tubular member, the expander member being axially movable within the tubular member to change the diameter thereof uniformly along its length, the tubular member being attachable to a honing machine for rotation therewith adjacent one end portion thereof by a mounting structure which enables the tubular member to expand and contract thereat to increase or decrease the diameter thereof. The abrasive particles attached to the tubular member form work engaging mandrel portions along at least a portion of the outer surface thereof, all of the work engaging portions being located on a substantially cylindrical honing envelope. The present mandrel constructions are especially adaptable for use in multi-stroke honing applications and also lend themselves to a two-piece construction including a tubular honing portion and a drive assembly portion.

TL;DR: In this paper, a laser beam is applied to individual surface elements over brief time periods, so that only the scale cover of graphite segments is opened, without removal of material from the surface.
Abstract: The method concerns treatment of piston slide paths made, in particular, of cast iron. The surface (3) is finished by honing and is then subjected to treatment by means of a laser beam focussed onto it. The laser beam is applied to individual surface elements over brief time periods, so that only the scale cover of graphite segments is opened, without removal of material from the surface. Pref. a laser with a short wavelength is led over the surface with a motion similar to the honing motion. The beam is either point or line focussed onto the surface. The beam from a laser located outside the tool is brought to the tool via a light guide. The laser is modulated (in particular, switched on and off) to produce a required surface texture of the piston slide path. USE/ADVANTAGE - In the motor industry. Its use results in improved wear resistance, as well as in reduced oil and fuel consumption. Simpler (and hence cheaper) piston rings can be used.

TL;DR: The aim of this report is to provide an overview of the current basic conditions of the gear honing process, which forms the basis for optimizing process design, with the aim of generating a cost-efficient gear Honing operation for gears with a tip diameter of more than 150 mm.
Abstract: In many cases, gear honing represents a cost-efficient process for gear manufacturers. Another advantage of gear honing is the generation of a surface structure on the tooth flank which improves the noise behavior of the gear. Previous research activities have resulted in reliable gear honing processes, particularly for automotive gears with a tip diameter of up to 150 mm. Problems occur, however, when honing larger gears with a tip diameter of more than 150 mm, thereby rendering a robust manufacturing process is difficult. In the course of this paper, an analysis will be carried out of the geometrical and kinematic conditions that will lead to a better understanding of the process. The aim of this report is to provide an overview of the current basic conditions of the gear honing process. Theoretical studies are conducted to identify differences in gear honing processes with various tip diameters. This analysis forms the basis for optimizing process design, with the aim of generating a cost-efficient gear honing operation for gears with a tip diameter of more than 150 mm.

TL;DR: In this paper, a system for finishing the cylindrical interior of a workpiece on a single machine is described, in which a skiving tool is used to remove imperfections in the interior of the workpiece.
Abstract: A system for finishing the cylindrical interior of a workpiece on a single machine is disclosed. The workpiece is mounted to allow access to its cylindrical interior from each end. A skiving tool is advanced into and through the cylindrical interior of the workpiece from one end to machine the cylindrical interior. As the skiving tool is operating, cutting oil is introduced into the cylindrical interior of the workpiece to entrain the chips generated by the skiving tool and flush the chips out through the second end of the workpiece. The cutting oil and entrained chips are deflected at the second end of the workpiece into a collector during operation of the skiving tool. The deflector is moveable to expose the second end of the workpiece when operation of the skiving tool is completed. A honing tool is advanced into and through the cylindrical interior of the workpiece from the second end thereof after the deflector has been moved and skiving completed. The honing tool removes imperfections in the cylindrical interior of the workpiece which had resulted from use of the skiving tool.
