TL;DR: In this paper, the effects of liners and rings on the wear of piston rings and cylinder liners were investigated and it was shown that liners alone are not sufficient to improve ring and cylinder wear.
Abstract: : Reciprocating wear tests were performed to investigate the effects of honing on the wear of ceramic coated piston rings and cylinder liners. The baseline or control cases consisted of testing ceramic coated rings against ceramic coated liner specimens whose surfaces were ground and lapped smooth. A second series of tests were performed with liner specimens with base and plateau honed surfaces. Test conditions were chosen to simulate the temperatures, pressures, and boundary lubricated conditions present at top ring reversal in a conventional diesel engine. Wear factor comparisons between the baseline cases and the tests with the honed liner specimens indicate that honing alone is not sufficient to ensure an improvement in ring and liner wear.

TL;DR: In this article, an apparatus for sharpening, grinding, polishing, or honing metal objects is described, which has a motor driven vertically mounted grinding wheel provided with a stream of water which can be recirculated to cool the grinding wheel.
Abstract: An apparatus is provided for sharpening, grinding, polishing or honing metal objects which has a motor driven vertically mounted grinding wheel provided with a stream of water which can be recirculated to cool the grinding wheel. The device is provided with an adjustable guard to be mounted at the top of the device which has formed in it several guide means for use in sharpening various tools. A pivotable guard plate can be selectively locked throughout a range of angles with respect to the grinding wheel to provide an appropriate support surface. The guard can be adjusted upwardly and downwardly to accommodate wearing down of the grinding wheel and to adjust the grinding angle.

31 Jan 2006TL;DR: In this article, a method of honing a cutting edge of a rotary cutting tool is described, which involves inserting the cutting tool into a liquid bath having an abrasive media therein such that at least the cutting edges are immersed, and providing a relative displacement of the cutting tools and the liquid bath such that the abrasives media flows over the cutting edge.
Abstract: A method of honing a cutting edge of a rotary cutting tool comprising inserting the cutting tool into a liquid bath having an abrasive media therein such that at least the cutting edges are immersed, and providing a relative displacement of the cutting tool and the liquid bath such that the abrasive media flows over the cutting edges.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors present a tool for machining a workpiece bore in one working stroke with honing coatings set in a fixed manner to the desired size of the bore.
Abstract: A honing tool for machining a workpiece bore (40) in one working stroke with honing coatings (22) set in fixed manner to the desired size of the bore, has on a non-readjustable part of the tool body (12) and preferably in the vicinity of a guide zone (28), air measuring nozzles (33). During the tool return stroke, these nozzles are subject to an action through the bore and measure the final size of the latter following the working zone (24). Optionally a readjustment can be automatically initiated as a function of the result.
