TL;DR: In this paper, the authors proposed a method to provide a means for piercing a part of a metallic pipe, and divided dies which have a cylindrical shape lower than the piercing means and having a shoulder portion having a convex outside portion around the means are built in the hydroforming dies.
Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a piercing method which can carry out a composite machining process of piercing and burring in hydroforming dies, and to provide piercing dies and a product manufactured by the hydroforming dies. SOLUTION: A piercing means for piercing a part of a metallic pipe, and divided dies which has a cylindrical shape lower than the piercing means and has a shoulder portion having a convex outside portion around the piercing means are built in the hydroforming dies. After the hydroforming process has been carried out by applying the internal pressure and the pushing force or the internal pressure in the direction of the axis of the pipe to the metallic pipe, the piercing means is advanced in the direction perpendicular or diagonal to the axis of the pipe in order to pierce a part of the metallic pipe. After that, the inside surface side of the metallic pipe can be deburred by pushing the neighborhood of the pierced hole into the inside surface side of the metallic pipe by means of the shoulder portion arranged around the piercing means. Abstract: For three dimensional tube hydroforming operations (i.e. T or Y shaped tubes) the calibration of both material feeding history and internal pressure path during the process is crucial and many approaches to such optimization were presented; the authors developed some procedures to optimize pressure paths and punch velocity histories with the application of an integrated method FEM - Gradient based optimization tools. In this paper, an experimental validation campaign of the utilized optimization strategies is presented with the aim to assess the effectiveness of the developed procedures. An optimization procedure (gradient based techniques) was applied on the process parameters leading to the determination of an optimal pressure path. Finally, a testing machine was set up to carry out hydroforming operations on T-shaped tubes. The developed equipment allows a computer assisted control of both the internal fluid pressure paths and the punches actions (material feeding paths). The experimental evidences validated the results obtained by the optimization strategies utilized to design the process parameters.

TL;DR: In this article, an attachable fastener nut is operated to pierce and form a collar in the part by forced insertion of the nut into the part and wherein the nut is fastened to the collar by friction welding, friction skip welding or mechanical locking depending on the form of the fastener.
Abstract: Method and apparatus are disclosed wherein a hydroformed part remains in a hydroforming die cavity under hydroforming pressure while an attachable fastener nut is operated to pierce and form a collar in the part by forced insertion of the nut into the part and wherein the nut is fastened to the collar by friction welding, friction skip welding or mechanical locking depending on the form of the fastener nut.

TL;DR: In this paper, a tube stock is obtained by rolling a steel plate member 18a of roughly trapezoidal shape to trace an external shape change of a product, is subjected to hydroforming.
Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a hydroformed product for improving the quality of a forming having an external section gradually and variously changing its outer diameter. SOLUTION: The hydroformed part is obtained by a method that a tube stock 18, which is roughly conical shape obtained by rolling a steel plate member 18a of roughly trapezoidal shape to trace an external shape change of a product, is subjected to hydroforming. Thus, in the case of the product 14 to have the external section changing gradually and variously its external diameter, the high quality product 14 with a tube expanding rate falling in a restricted range is obtained.
