Abstract: Cardiorespiratory and blood gas alterations were evaluated in 6 healthy dogs that underwent a laparoscopic procedure using isoflurane anesthesia and carbon dioxide (CO2) pneumoperitoneum for 30 min. Heart rate, respiratory rate, body temperature, venous blood pH, partial pressure of CO2 and oxygen, oxygen saturation, total carbon dioxide (TCO2) and bicarbonate were monitored. Significant alterations were hypercapnia, hypoventilation, and respiratory acidosis.

Abstract: ROHHAD syndrome is an exceedingly rare cause of central hypoventilation. A 7-year-old girl with ROHHAD syndrome who had central hypoventilation, rapid weight gain, multiple cardiac arrests and hyperprolactinemia. She required prolonged and repeated ventilation, and finally died due to complications of ventilation. ROHHAD Syndrome should be suspected in any child who presents with obesity, behavioral changes or autonomic instability following a neural crest tumor.

Abstract: Complete airway obstruction leads to asphyxia (hypoxia plus hypercarbia) and cardiac arrest within five to ten minutes. Partial airway obstruction (increased airway resistance) may result in increased fluctuations of intrathoracic pressure, increased work of breathing, decreased respiratory response to carbon dioxide, hypoventilation with hypoxia and hypercarbia, cerebral congestion and edema, pulmonary edema, cardiovascular disturbances, exhaustion, and secondary apnea with cardiac arrest. A patent airway thus is the key to resuscitation and life-support. In the unconscious patient, hypopharyngeal obstruction by the base of the relaxed tongue occurs always when the neck is flexed and almost always when the head is in the mid-position. This is dependent upon head-jaw position and occurs regardless of whether the patient is prone or supine. While gravity may aid in drainage of liquid foreign matter, it does not counteract hypopharyngeal softtissue obstruction. Abstract: This invention relates to compounds, pharmaceutical compositions and methods for use in the prevention and treatment of cerebral insufficiency, including enhancement of receptor functioning in synapses in brain networks responsible for basic and higher order behaviors. These brain networks, which are involved in regulation of breathing, and cognitive abilities related to memory impairment, such as is observed in a variety of dementias, in imbalances in neuronal activity between different brain regions, as is suggested in disorders such as Parkinson's disease, schizophrenia, respiratory depression, sleep apneas, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and affective or mood disorders, and in disorders wherein a deficiency in neurotrophic factors is implicated, as well as in disorders of respiration such as overdose of an alcohol, an opiate, an opioid, a barbiturate, an anesthetic, or a nerve toxin, or where the respiratory depression results form a medical condition such as central sleep apnea, stroke- induced central sleep apnea, obstructive sleep apnea, congenital hypoventilation syndrome, obesity hypoventilation syndrome, sudden infant death syndrome, Rett syndrome, spinal cord injury, traumatic brain injury, Cheney-Stokes respiration, Ondines curse, Prader-Willi's syndrome and drowning. In a particular aspect, the invention relates to compounds useful for treatment of such conditions, and methods of using these compounds for such treatment.
