TL;DR: In this article, a bibliographical research was carried out on this topic, complemented by our experience as sociologists in teaching and research on the organizational theme in some databases, such as Web of Knowledge, DOAJ, SCIELO, and institutional repositories.
Abstract: Purpose of this study: This article intends to contribute to the discussion of the heuristic and analytical potentialities of the ideal type of bureaucracy proposed by Max Weber for the analysis of contemporary organizations. Methodology: For this essay, a bibliographical research was carried out on this topic, complemented by our experience as sociologists in teaching and research on the organizational theme in some databases, such as Web of Knowledge, DOAJ, SCIELO, and institutional repositories. Findings: For Max Weber, the bureaucracy presents very specific characteristics that differ, in varied situations, from the representation and application often conferred to this model of organizational administration. Implications: Bureaucracy is a notion with great social visibility and is associated with an image where negative aspects are emphasized. However, in discursive records of a scientific nature, bureaucracy is a relevant concept in Sociology and Organizational Theory studies.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors analyze the rationales for excluding relevant evidence with the aim of establishing the ideal type of exclusion system for each rationale, and investigate whether individual legal systems have actually altered their legal rules in accordance with these ideal systems.
Abstract: The chapter analyzes the rationales for excluding relevant evidence with the aim of establishing the ideal type of exclusion system for each rationale. The authors then review to what extent individual legal systems have actually altered their legal rules in accordance with these ideal systems. An investigation into whether or not there are any consistent relationships between the ideal systems and proclaimed rationales is conducted. The structure of various exclusionary rules is also explored, as are other factors that may influence the law and practical application of such rules.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors discuss Max Weber's concept of ideal type, as a modus of knowledge that connects the contingent and controversial activities of scholarship and parliamentary politics, and the procedures and practices of Westminster parliament serve as the historical approximation of the parliamentary ideal type of politics.
Abstract: The chapter discusses in detail Max Weber’s concept of ideal type, as a modus of knowledge that connects the contingent and controversial activities of scholarship and parliamentary politics. Weber regards the constantly changing reality as inexhaustible by any concepts. However, concepts offer competing ideal-typical perspectives on the interpretation of the changing realities. For Weber, the research process is a contingent and open-ended practice in which new perspectives contain chances to provoke conceptual revisions, whereas the absence of new perspectives would lead to stagnation. Understanding realised histories presupposes speculation with ideal types. The procedures and practices of Westminster parliament serve in this book as the historical approximation of the parliamentary ideal type of politics. When discussing specific topics, Westminster principles and practices are frequently quoted as the main ‘real world’ connection, around which the ideal type will be formed.

TL;DR: In this paper, a bibliographic search was carried out on this topic, starting from the situation of Sociology in Portugal, and the authors' experience in teaching and research in the area of sociology and related social sciences of about 20 years was also used.
Abstract: The (re)formulation of the sociologist’s professional identity has been, and it is, a process of permanent search for legitimation and institutionalisation. This paper aims to discuss the sociologist’s professional identity, thus seeking to add to a deepening of this subject. For this purpose, a bibliographic search was carried out on this topic, starting from the situation of Sociology in Portugal. Furthermore, the authors’ experience in teaching and research in the area of Sociology and related social sciences of about 20 years was also used. It is concluded that, in analytical terms, it is possible to differentiate ideal type profiles of the sociologist’s professional identity. Yet, there is the need to be aware, on the one hand, of the possibility that the same sociologist can share features of more than one type, and, on the other hand, of the fact that, over time, both the sociologist’s professional identity and the typology itself may be subject to changes.

TL;DR: Palonen et al. as discussed by the authors present a thought experiment to spell out key principles of the parliamentary ideal type of politics, namely a mode of proceeding, set of rhetorical practices and a way to deal with spending and saving time.
Abstract: In this book, Kari Palonen undertakes a thought experiment to spell out key principles of the parliamentary ideal type of politics. Max Weber offers him the main intellectual inspiration, Westminster parliament provides the main historical reference and the author’s studies on parliamentary procedure and rhetoric provide the background. Parliamentary acting and thinking offers us the best example of politics as contingent and controversial activity. In parliament, the pro et contra debate on the motions and the dissensus between perspectives of judging as well as playing in time and with time are built into the institution itself. In this sense, parliamentary politics is more than parliamentary government, namely a mode of proceeding, set of rhetorical practices and a way to deal with spending and saving time.
