TL;DR: In this paper, a color imaging system is provided that captures an image in a color format that comprises a plurality of chromatic intensity values, detects whether the image is substantially achromatic (i.e., gray-scale or black-and-white), and renders the chromatic values as grayscale luminance or black and white values.
Abstract: A color imaging system is provided that captures an image in a color format that comprises a plurality of chromatic intensity values, detects whether the image is substantially achromatic (i.e., gray-scale or black and white), and renders the chromatic intensity values as grayscale luminance or black and white values. A color imager comprising an array of color photocells captures the image. An image processor is provided with a white balance circuit, a gray-scale image detection circuit, and an image conversion circuit. The white balance circuit adjusts the chromatic values to correct for non-ideal sources of white light illumination. The gray-scale image detection circuit detects whether the image is substantially achromatic. The image conversion circuit renders the image as a gray-scale or black-and-white image, as the circumstances dictate.

TL;DR: In this paper, the variation dP of the camera pitch angle from picked-up lane marks is automatically detected and adjusted to adjust a converted image by automatically detecting the variation of camera pitch angles from picked up lane marks.
Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To automatically detect the variation of a camera pitch angle from picked-up lane marks and automatically adjust a converted image. SOLUTION: The image pickup and image conversion device loaded in a vehicle and fixed on a point C of height (h) and capable of picking up the image of a road surface on the back of the vehicle from a camera and converting the picked up image into a bird's-eye image detects lane marks to be parallel lines and judges whether the lane marks are parallel lines or not. When the lane marks are not parallel lines, the variation dP of the camera pitch angle Pc is obtained from width Wi1 on a position most close to the vehicle in the bird's eye image, width Wi2 on a position most far from the vehicle and an angle P in the vertical direction of the camera in an area to be converted into the bird's-eye image and Pc+dP is substituted for the camera pitch angle to prepare a bird's-eye image again.

TL;DR: In this article, a new high-quality video-format-conversion IC for consumer applications is introduced, which uses motion estimation and motion compensation to prevent jitter resulting from picture-rate conversion, and aliasing due to de-interlacing in sequences with motion.
Abstract: High-quality video-format converters apply motion estimation and motion compensation to prevent jitter resulting from picture-rate conversion, and aliasing due to de-interlacing, in sequences with motion. Although initially considered as too expensive, high-quality conversion is now economically feasible, and since 1995 has been available in consumer television ICs. This paper addresses the issues in format conversion and shows recent progress, introducing a new high-quality video-format-conversion IC for consumer applications.

TL;DR: In this paper, an apparatus and method for magnifying a dynamic range of an image while improving a contrast of the image is described, and a bias calculator determines a threshold value for dividing into low and high illuminance levels on the basis of a histogram output by the histogram calculator.
Abstract: An apparatus and method for magnifying a dynamic range of an image while improving a contrast of an image are provided. A histogram calculator receives a digital image signal and calculates histograms depending on the illuminance distribution of an image. A histogram accumulator receives a histogram output by the histogram calculator, obtains an accumulative density function by integrating the input histogram up to each illuminance level and normalizes the accumulative density function, and generates an initial conversion function. A bias calculator determines a threshold value for dividing into a low illuminance level and a high illuminance level on the basis of a histogram output by the histogram calculator, and obtains a histogram compensation function for applying a negative bias to a histogram around the threshold value. A converter converts a digital image signal input with a predetermined delay time, according to an image conversion function obtained by applying the histogram compensation function to the initial conversion function. A digital-to-analog (D/A) converter converts a digital image signal converted by the converter into an analog image signal. Accordingly, the entire contrast of an image is improved, and simultaneously, the dynamic range thereof is magnified.

TL;DR: In this paper, the significant pels are identified and a resolution conversion characteristics selector selects one of two or more frequency conversion characteristics to be used for resolution conversion of the image signal using only significant pixels.
Abstract: An image signal expressing pel values and a significance signal declaring for each pel whether the pel value is significant are supplied as input signals. By referring to the input significance signal values for the pels proximal to the pel being processed, the significant pels are identified and a resolution conversion characteristics selector selects one of two or more frequency conversion characteristics to be used for resolution conversion of the image signal using only significant pels. A resolution converter then converts the resolution of the input image signal using the selected resolution conversion characteristic, and outputs the result as the image conversion apparatus output signal. Resolution conversion of the input image signal can therefore be accomplished by means of pel subsampling or interpolation without being affected by nonsignificant pels, and resolution conversion with minimal image quality loss caused by the conversion process is achieved.
