Abstract: The present invention is directed to systems and methods for controlling 2-D to 3-D image conversion and/or generation. The methods and systems use auto-fitting techniques to create a mask based upon tracking features from frame to frame. When features are determined to be missing they are added prior to auto-fitting the mask.

Abstract: A system for converting an input bitmap image (12) of one resolution to an output bitmap image (14) of a different resolution. A mapping (10) is defined between pixels in the input bitmap and pixels in the output bitmap. An error term (16) is used to link successive output pixel determinations. For each output value determination (28) the values of the mapped input pixels are added to the error term to create a test value (22) that determines what output is generated; the output value generated therefrom is then subtracted from the test value to create the next value of the error term (16). The conversion system is of particular advantage in converting an image having gray scale that is represented in a binary bitmap where gray scale is represented by the ratio of the number of ''on'' pixels to the number of ''off'' pixels. The present image conversion system performs a conversion such that the output bitmap represents such gray scale particularly well.

Abstract: It is disclosed that in order to form an image of which the continuity is not lost from the image information of an area in which a double image exists and the vicinity thereof and prevent the deterioration of the image, an image processing portion to which video signals from left and right image taking systems are input has an image input portion, an image conversion portion and a synthesized image memory. The image conversion portion has a corresponding point sampling unit for sampling pairs of corresponding points corresponding to the same portion of an object from the video signals, a double image area-dividing unit for effecting the area division of a double image on the basis of the information of the three-dimensional positions of the sampled pairs of corresponding points, a double image mode-discriminating judging unit for determining an image of greater probability with which each double image is connected to a double image non-generating area, and an either image of two systems and common images of two ones simultaneous-removal unit which uses as synthesized image forming data the image determined to be more probably connected to the double image non-generating area by the double image mode-discriminating judging unit, and removes the other image.

Abstract: Conventionally, there has been a problem that a viewer is tired when playing back images mixedly including 2D images and 3D images, because images change frequently. A storage part stores 2D images and 3D images, an image conversion part that converts the 2D image stored in the storage part into a new 3D image, and an image output part that outputs the 3D image stored in the storage part and the new 3D image converted by the image conversion part. Consequently, it is possible to prevent a viewer from tiring when playing back images mixedly including 2D images and 3D images.

Abstract: Provided are an apparatus and method for converting a low-resolution depth image to a depth image having a resolution identical to a resolution of a high-resolution color image. The depth image conversion apparatus may generate a discrete depth image by quantizing a depth value of an up-sampled depth image, estimate a high-resolution discrete depth image by optimizing an objective functions of the discrete depth image based on the high-resolution color image and an up-sampled depth border, and convert the up-sampled depth image to a high-resolution depth image by filtering the up-sampled depth image when a difference between discrete depth values of neighboring pixels in the high-resolution discrete depth image is less than a predetermined threshold value.
