TL;DR: In this paper, a digital signal processor is used to transform blocks of digital image signals derived from an image sensor into sets of coefficient signals and encodes the coefficient signals into a stream of compressed signals.
Abstract: Electronic still imaging apparatus includes a digital signal processor (22) that transforms blocks of digital image signals derived from an image sensor (12) into sets of coefficient signals and encodes the coefficient signals into a stream of compressed signals. In addition, the digital processor generates reduced resolution image signals from the digital image signals and downloads both the compressed (high resolution) image signals and the reduced resolution image signals to a removable digital memory (24). By associating each high resolution image with its low resolution counterpart in a common multi-format image file, the image can be quickly accessed and a low resolution review image can be put up on a display device (116) without waiting for expansion and processing of the larger full resolution image.

TL;DR: In this paper, the acquisition and use of digital images in a wide variety of scientific fields is discussed. But the focus is on high dynamic range imaging in more than two dimensions.
Abstract: "This guide clearly explains the acquisition and use of digital images in a wide variety of scientific fields. This sixth edition features new sections on selecting a camera with resolution appropriate for use on light microscopes, on the ability of current cameras to capture raw images with high dynamic range, and on imaging in more than two dimensions. It discusses Dmax for X-ray images and combining images with different exposure settings to further extend the dynamic range. This edition also includes a new chapter on shape measurements, a review of new developments in image file searching, and a wide range of new examples and diagrams"

TL;DR: In this article, a system and method for storing, retrieving displaying, printing and otherwise manipulating color images stored in a central "host" computer from a realtor's remote data terminal includes a host computer which stores and maintains a database containing listings of real estate properties on the market.
Abstract: A system and method for storing, retrieving displaying, printing and otherwise manipulating color images stored in a central "host" computer from a realtor's remote data terminal includes a host computer which stores and maintains a database containing listings of real estate properties on the market. The host computer also optionally can store image information relating to specific properties. Images can be loaded from remote terminals over telephone lines to the host system on an interactive basis. Images can then be retrieved from the host system, also on an interactive basis, for display, printing, or storage on a storage medium associated with the remote display terminals. Images may also be deleted on an interactive basis from a remote terminal. A specific communications protocol conveys image data between the host computer and remote data terminals. This protocol includes specific "time-out" limitations, CRC error checking schemes, and a specific "handshaking" signalling sequence that must be observed before the host system will permit manipulation of image files.

TL;DR: In this article, a collection of captured images that form at least a portion of a library of images is used to enable retrieval of the captured images, and an index is generated where the index data is based on recognized information.
Abstract: An embodiment provides for enabling retrieval of a collection of captured images that form at least a portion of a library of images. For each image in the collection, a captured image may be analyzed to recognize information from image data contained in the captured image, and an index may be generated, where the index data is based on the recognized information. Using the index, functionality such as search and retrieval is enabled. Various recognition techniques, including those that use the face, clothing, apparel, and combinations of characteristics may be utilized. Recognition may be performed on, among other things, persons and text carried on objects.

TL;DR: In this article, the dominant colors of an image are determined using groups of pixels where the average color is used to select an appropriate dominant color for display, and the size of the thumbnail displayed and the area set for displaying the thumbnail can be changed to allow visual review of either a large number of thumbnails or a smaller but larger size set of thumbnail images.
Abstract: A system which creates, stores, retrieves and displays thumbnail images. The dominant colors of the image are displayed in the thumbnail images. The dominant colors in an image are determined using groups of pixels where the average color is used to select an appropriate dominant color for display. The size of the thumbnails displayed and the area set for displaying the thumbnails can be changed to allow visual review of either a large number of thumbnails or a smaller but larger size set of thumbnails. Thumbnails, and other image files and other related text files and non-related files can be indexed and searched using keywords by using keyword views into the stored files to indicate a match when the views designate the same file. The system allows a search to be based on a partial match of keywords. Searching can be performed using super-keywords, which are combinations of keywords and other file and data characteristics. Super-keywords can be combined with other super-keyword or keywords for searching purposes. To facilitate multi-media storage and searching and integration of off-line media into the system, the system includes a master directory having a full directory containing entries of each media as a branch of the master directory tree. The system also includes the utilities necessary to create, access, retrieve and update local and network accessed remote files on any type of media.
