TL;DR: A near-optimal yet computationally tractable approach to this joint estimation problem using loopy belief propagation is proposed and the recently proposed “generalized approximate message passing” (GAMP) algorithm with the forward-backward algorithm and soft-input soft-output decoding using a “turbo” approach is merged.
Abstract: We propose a novel receiver for orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) transmissions in impulsive noise environments. Impulsive noise arises in many modern wireless and wireline communication systems, such as Wi-Fi and powerline communications, due to uncoordinated interference that is much stronger than thermal noise. We first show that the bit-error-rate optimal receiver jointly estimates the propagation channel coefficients, the noise impulses, the finite-alphabet symbols, and the unknown bits. We then propose a near-optimal yet computationally tractable approach to this joint estimation problem using loopy belief propagation. In particular, we merge the recently proposed “generalized approximate message passing” (GAMP) algorithm with the forward-backward algorithm and soft-input soft-output decoding using a “turbo” approach. Numerical results indicate that the proposed receiver drastically outperforms existing receivers under impulsive noise and comes within 1 dB of the matched-filter bound. Meanwhile, with N tones, the proposed factor-graph-based receiver has only O(NlogN) complexity, and it can be parallelized.

TL;DR: An efficient denoising scheme and its VLSI architecture for the removal of random-valued impulse noise is proposed and can obtain better performances in terms of both quantitative evaluation and visual quality than the previous lower complexity methods.
Abstract: Images are often corrupted by impulse noise in the procedures of image acquisition and transmission. In this paper, we propose an efficient denoising scheme and its VLSI architecture for the removal of random-valued impulse noise. To achieve the goal of low cost, a low-complexity VLSI architecture is proposed. We employ a decision-tree-based impulse noise detector to detect the noisy pixels, and an edge-preserving filter to reconstruct the intensity values of noisy pixels. Furthermore, an adaptive technology is used to enhance the effects of removal of impulse noise. Our extensive experimental results demonstrate that the proposed technique can obtain better performances in terms of both quantitative evaluation and visual quality than the previous lower complexity methods. Moreover, the performance can be comparable to the higher,- complexity methods. The VLSI architecture of our design yields a processing rate of about 200 MHz by using TSMC 0.18 μm technology. Compared with the state-of-the-art techniques, this work can reduce memory storage by more than 99 percent. The design requires only low computational complexity and two line memory buffers. Its hardware cost is low and suitable to be applied to many real-time applications.

TL;DR: FBDA is a fuzzy-based switching median filter in which the filtering is applied only to corrupted pixels in the image while the uncorrupted pixels are left unchanged and produces better results in terms of both quantitative measures such as PSNR, SSIM, IEF and qualitative measuressuch as Image Quality Index (IQI).
Abstract: This paper proposes a new efficient fuzzy-based decision algorithm (FBDA) for the restoration of images that are corrupted with high density of impulse noises. FBDA is a fuzzy-based switching median filter in which the filtering is applied only to corrupted pixels in the image while the uncorrupted pixels are left unchanged. The proposed algorithm computes the difference measure for each pixel based on the central pixel (corrupted pixel) in a selected window and then calculates the membership value for each pixel based on the highest difference. The algorithm then eliminates those pixels from the window with very high and very low membership values, which might represent the impulse noises. Median filter is then applied to the remaining pixels in the window to get the restored value for the current pixel position. The proposed algorithm produces excellent results compared to conventional method such as standard median filter (SMF) as well as some advanced techniques such as adaptive median filters (AMF), efficient decision-based algorithm (EDBA), improved efficient decision-based algorithm (IDBA) and boundary discriminative noise detection (BDND) switching median filter. The efficiency of the proposed algorithm is evaluated using different standard images. From experimental analysis, it has been found that FBDA produces better results in terms of both quantitative measures such as PSNR, SSIM, IEF and qualitative measures such as Image Quality Index (IQI).

TL;DR: An approach, based on threshold Boolean filtering, where the binary slices of an image, obtained by the threshold decomposition, are processed by the impulse-detecting Boolean functions proposed, which provide a possibility of single-pass filtering.
Abstract: A filter for impulsive noise removal is presented here. The problem of impulsive noise elimination is closely connected with the problem of maximal preservation of image edges. To avoid smoothing of the image during filtering, all noisy pixels must be detected. We consider here an approach, which is based on threshold Boolean filtering, where the binary slices of an image, obtained by the threshold decomposition, are processed by the impulse-detecting Boolean functions proposed. These functions provide a possibility of single-pass filtering, because they detect and replace impulses at the same time.
