TL;DR: The characteristics of impulse radio using a modulation format that can be supported by currently available impulse signal technology are described and analytical estimates of its multiple- access capability under ideal multiple-access channel conditions are given.
Abstract: Impulse radio, a form of ultra-wide bandwidth (UWB) spread-spectrum signaling, has properties that make it a viable candidate for short-range communications in dense multipath environments. This paper describes the characteristics of impulse radio using a modulation format that can be supported by currently available impulse signal technology and gives analytical estimates of its multiple-access capability under ideal multiple-access channel conditions.

TL;DR: In this article, a nominally plane turbulent jet is synthesized by the interactions of a train of counter-rotating vortex pairs that are formed at the edge of an orifice by the time-periodic motion of a flexible diaphragm in a sealed cavity.
Abstract: A nominally plane turbulent jet is synthesized by the interactions of a train of counter-rotating vortex pairs that are formed at the edge of an orifice by the time-periodic motion of a flexible diaphragm in a sealed cavity. Even though the jet is formed without net mass injection, the hydrodynamic impulse of the ejected fluid and thus the momentum of the ensuing jet are nonzero. Successive vortex pairs are not subjected to pairing or other subharmonic interactions. Each vortex of the pair develops a spanwise instability and ultimately undergoes transition to turbulence, slows down, loses its coherence and becomes indistinguishable from the mean jet flow. The trajectories of vortex pairs at a given formation frequency scale with the length of the ejected fluid slug regardless of the magnitude of the formation impulse and, near the jet exit plane, their celerity decreases monotonically with streamwise distance while the local mean velocity of the ensuing jet increases. In the far field, the synthetic jet i...

TL;DR: In this paper, a progressive switching median (PSM) filter is proposed to restore images corrupted by salt-pepper impulse noise, where an impulse detection algorithm is used before filtering, thus only a proportion of all the pixels will be filtered; and progressive methods are progressively applied through several iterations.
Abstract: A new median-based filter, progressive switching median (PSM) filter, is proposed to restore images corrupted by salt-pepper impulse noise. The algorithm is developed by the following two main points: 1) switching scheme-an impulse detection algorithm is used before filtering, thus only a proportion of all the pixels will be filtered; and 2) progressive methods-both the impulse detection and the noise filtering procedures are progressively applied through several iterations. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm is better than traditional median-based filters and is particularly effective for the cases where the images are very highly corrupted.

TL;DR: A switching scheme for median filtering which is suitable to be a prefilter before some subsequent processing e.g. edge detection or data compression is presented to remove impulse noises in digital images with small signal distortion.
Abstract: A switching scheme for median filtering which is suitable to be a prefilter before some subsequent processing e.g. edge detection or data compression is presented to remove impulse noises in digital images with small signal distortion. The switching procedure is based on the local measurements of impulses which is called impulse detection. A median and weighted median based impulse detector is devised and the relevant properties are discussed. By using a test image, we demonstrate that the filtering structure yields an output image which is significantly better than those of median, weighted median and optimal stack filters.
