Abstract: 1. Eggs from two layer-type breeder flocks (ISA-W vs Leghorn) between 30 and 45 weeks of age were used in 4 trials to study the effects of lighted incubation on embryonic growth from 5 to 18 d of age and hatchability per cent (HP). The physical dimensions, eggshell characteristics and conductance (EC) of eggs of the two strains were compared. 2. Eggs were set in an incubator on trays either in the dark-control or under two tubes of 20-watt white fluorescent light during the first 18 d of incubation. The light intensity ranged from 1230 to 1790 lux at the surface of the eggs. Eggs were transferred to dark hatching compartments at d 19 of incubation. 3. The genetic make-up of birds influenced the physical dimensions and eggshell characteristics of eggs. ISA-W eggs had higher weight, surface area (ESA), volume (EV), width, EC, shell volume and HP, and lower ESA:EV ratio, per cent shell, shell density and dead embryos than those of Leghorn eggs. 4. Lighted incubation increased daily embryonic growth (mg/d) and HP by 3.9 and 5.9%, respectively, when compared with the dark-control incubation. 5. The physical dimensions and eggshell characteristics of eggs influenced the effects of lighted incubation on embryonic growth and HP. Lighted incubation increased embryonic growth and HP of ISA-W eggs. The increase in embryonic growth and HP of the Leghorn eggs was not significant. 6. The genetic make-up of birds influenced the physical dimensions and eggshell characteristics of their eggs and these differences in the characteristics of hatching eggs influenced embryonic growth and HP when incubated under light.

Abstract: Two different lines of osteoblast-like cells were used to investigate the effect of advanced glycation end-products of bovine serum albumin on cell proliferation and differentiation. These parameters were found to be both dose- and time-dependent. Cell proliferation remained unchanged after a 24 h incubation period, it increased after intermediate periods of incubation with advanced glycation end-products, but was found to be depressed after several days incubation. Cellular alkaline phosphatase activity followed a similar pattern: an initial increase induced by advanced glycation end-products was generally followed, after relatively long incubation periods, by a slight but significant decrease in this parameter. 45Ca2+ uptake was only significantly inhibited by advanced glycation end-products after 24 h incubation. These results suggest that advanced glycation end-products directly regulate osteoblast proliferation and differentiation in a dose and time dependent manner.

Abstract: Abeta deposits and tau pathology were investigated in 24 French patients that died from iatrogenic Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease after exposure to cadaver-derived human growth hormone (c-hGH) in the 1980s. Abeta deposits were found only in one case that had experienced one of the longest incubation periods. Three cases had also intracellular tau accumulation. The analysis of 24 batches of c-hGH, produced between 1974 and 1988, demonstrated for the first time the presence of Abeta and tau contaminants in c-hGH (in 17 and 6 batches, respectively). The incubation of prion disease was shorter in the French patients than the incubation times reported in two previously published British series. We interpreted the low incidence of Abeta in this French series as a consequence of the shorter incubation period observed in France, as compared to that observed in the United Kingdom. This concept suggested that a mean incubation period for the development of detectable Abeta deposits would be longer than 18 years after the first exposure. Moreover, we hypothesized that tau pathology might also be transmissible in humans.

Abstract: Reproduction in birds requires the input of time and energy during discrete breeding phases leading to investment trade-offs between laying date, clutch size, body mass, and incubation constancy. We investigated costs during incubation by experimentally enlarging 25 clutches of white-tailed ptarmigan Lagopus leucurus. The experiment was conducted in 2 years, one with harsh weather that forced a natural delay in reproduction. When forced to delay egg-laying, females began incubation with poorer body condition and foraged more during incubation. Rates of mass loss during incubation were not affected by clutch enlargement, and did not differ between harsh and benign years; however, females that were heavier at the start of incubation lost more mass than lighter females. Clutch-enlarged females had reduced nest attendance compared to control birds in both years and incubation periods increased by up to 2 days relative to controls. In the harsh year, there was a trend for clutch-enlarged females to have lower nest success, but there was no effect on overwinter survival. Different behavioral responses by females in the 2 years showed that incubation costs may depend on other factors such as female quality, food supply, or weather conditions. Incubation is a dynamic period during which birds may adjust energy balances by varying body condition and food intake.

Abstract: Subjects worked on a problem, engaged in an intervening activity, and then resumed work on the problem. Different intervening activities represented various mechanisms that might produce incubation (e.g., set breaking, facilitation by analogy, review of the problem's elements). These various treatment groups were compared to a control group that worked on the problem continuously. None of them showed evidence of incubation, despite previously reported incubation with the same problem. Since these systematically negative findings are consistent with those of several recent studies, the status of incubation as an objectively demonstrated phenomenon is questioned and directions for further research are suggested.
