TL;DR: In this article, a general analysis of elastic/plastic indentation fracture for an arbitrary-shaped indenter is presented based on the observation that the residual indentation stress field provides the driving force for crack formation.
Abstract: A general analysis of elastic/plastic indentation fracture for an arbitrary-shaped indenter is presented. The analysis is based on the observation that the residual indentation stress field provides the driving force for crack formation. After establishing that the influences of indenter geometry and load on the residual field are completely characterized by the volume of the indentation, a relation between the extent of radial cracking, the indentation volume, and the material properties is derived. Predictions of the analysis are examined by comparing calculated load/crack-length relations for two specific indenter geometries (Vickers pyramid and sphere) with experimental measurements in ZnS. For Vickers indentation the crack length is proportional to (load)2/3, whereas for spherical indenters the variation of crack length with load is nearly linear.

TL;DR: In this paper, an indentation-quench method to determine the resistance of ceramics to thermal cycling is presented. But the method is applied to three different materials, which are ranked according to the individual values of ΔTc.
Abstract: This paper presents an indentation-quench method to determine the resistance of ceramics to thermal cycling. The method defines a critical quench temperature difference, ΔTc, based on a criterion which includes a minimum amount of crack growth and a minimum fraction of growing cracks. The method is applied to three different materials, which are ranked according to the individual values of ΔTc. The variation of ΔTc with different indentation loads and indentation positions is investigated. This technique uses a small number of specimens, avoids subsequent mechanical testing, and provides information about the ΔTC of the materials. The effect of repeated cycling on crack extension is also discussed.

TL;DR: In this article, Vickers indentation fracture resistance data for Standard Reference Material SRM 2100 are presented and the weak points of the method are reviewed and compared to other fracture toughness test methods.
Abstract: Fracture toughness is an important property that characterizes a material's brittleness or resistance to fracture. Although some fracture toughness test methods have been refined and even standardized, many researchers have continued to use the Vickers indentation crack length method as an expedient. In this paper, Vickers indentation fracture resistance data for Standard Reference Material SRM 2100 are presented and the weak points of the method are reviewed.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors applied the Berkovich and cube corner pyramids at constant strain rate for nanoindentation and microtensile tests on galvanically grown nickel films and showed that the results were in good agreement with the stress-strain values measured in tension.
