TL;DR: In this paper, a rough surface indentation size effect (ISE) model was developed to estimate the work expended to flatten the rough surface and to deform the flattened surface, and the applicability of the model is discussed in terms of a critical contact depth for the surface roughness effect on ISE.

TL;DR: In this paper, the power of neural networks in identifying material parameters from data obtained by spherical indentation is demonstrated for an academic problem (pure kinematichardening, given Youngs modulus).
Abstract: In this paper the power of neural networks in identifying material parameters fromdata obtained by spherical indentation is demonstrated for an academic problem (pure kinematichardening, given Youngs modulus) . To obtain a data basis for the training and validation of theneural network, numerous finite element simulations were carried out for various sets of materialparameters. The constitutive model describing finite deformation plasticity is formulated withnonlinear kinematic hardening of Armstrong–Frederick type. It was shown by Huber and Tsakmakis, 1998a that the depth–load response of a cyclic indentation process, consisting ofloading, unloading and reloading of the indenter displays a typical hysteresis loop for givenmaterial parameters. The inverse problem of leading the depth–load response back to the relatedparameters in the constitutive equations is solved using a neutral network.

TL;DR: In this paper, a study to determine the fracture toughness and to characterize fracture modes of silicon as a function of the orientation of single-crystal and poly-crystalline material was presented.
Abstract: The paper presents a study to determine the fracture toughness and to characterize fracture modes of silicon as a function of the orientation of single-crystal and polycrystalline material. It is shown that bar specimens cracked by Knoop microhardness indentation and tested to fracture under four-point bending at room temperature were used to determine the fracture toughness values. It is found that the lowest fracture toughness value of single crystal silicon was 0.82 MN/m to the 3/2 in the 111 plane type orientation, although the difference in values in the 111, 110, and 100 planes was small.

TL;DR: In this article, a classical indentation apparatus was used, and an original scratch experimental setup was designed, allowing for a monotonic loading (or unloading) of the indenter combined with a controlled sliding of the specimen beneath the indent, and clear relationships were established between the glass compositions and the indentation-scratching behavior.
Abstract: Contact mechanics problems are of fundamental interest both to understand the process of surface damage and matter removal in brittle materials, and to develop a method to evaluate their scratch resistance. In order to get insight into these problems in the case of soda–lime–silica glasses, a classical indentation apparatus was used, and an original scratch experimental setup was designed, allowing for a monotonic loading (or unloading) of the indenter combined with a controlled sliding of the specimen beneath the indenter. The influences of the normal load, the moisture level and the glass composition have been studied, and clear relationships were established between the glass compositions and the indentation-scratching behavior. The indentation and scratching characteristics such as the critical-crack-initiation loads and the transition loads between the different scratch regimes were correlated and interpreted in the light of the brittleness index and structural considerations.
