Abstract: An inductively powered sensor system includes a primary conductive path 100 capable of being energised to provide an electromagnetic field in a defined space 1. An inductive power pick-up 120 is associated with a sensor 124 and is capable of receiving power from the field to supply the sensor 124. The system includes a first sensing means to sense the power available to the pick-up 120 and control means to increase or decrease the power available to the sensor dependant on the sensed power available. A method of inductively powering a sensor, an inductively powered sensor and an animal enclosure including one or more primary conductive path of an inductive power supply are also disclosed.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for welding that includes a power source and a wire feeder is disclosed. One or more sensors sense one or more welding conditions before the weld is initiated. A set up circuit is coupled to sensor, the power source, and the wire feeder. The set up circuit automatically sets up the welding machine in response to what the sensor senses. The sensor may be a wire sensor, including a diameter sensor and a material sensor, a gas sensor (if a source of gas is included) such as a cyclic voltametry gas microsensor, a workpiece thickness sensor such as a strain gauge or displacement sensor. Alternatively the sensor includes a bar code reader that reads a code on, for example, the spool of wire, an analog proximity detector, a plurality of proximity detectors, and a displacement sensor.

Abstract: Individual appliances’ electricity consumption is automatically disaggregated from a single custom metering system on the main feed to an occupied residential building. A data acquisition system samples voltage and current at 100 kHz, then calculates real and reactive power, harmonics, and other features at 20Hz. A probabilistic eventdetector using the generalized likelihood ratio (GLR) matches human-labeled events to the time-series of features. Machine-learning classification was most successful with the 1-nearest-neighbor algorithm, correctly identifying 90% of the laboratorygenerated training events and 79% of validation examples. The challenge of obtaining adequate training data for the real-world home leads to the development of the Wire Spy, a wirelessly-networked event detector with an inductive sensor which clamps to the cable of an appliance.

Abstract: Noncontacting inductive sensors are applicable on a large scale for position detection or travel measurement in industrial applications. Reasons for such broad acceptance in many sectors of industry are noncontact and wear-free sensing of the target (any metal object), reliability and robustness, resistance to fouling, water tightness and compact size. The present work is intended to be a systematic, complete, and consistent presentation of the technological innovations, recent implementations and current trends regarding the analog distance and travel sensing offered by noncontacting inductive sensors for industrial applications. It starts with the fundamentals of inductive sensing and presents the physical basics gained by modern analytic and simulation methods, as well as high-level integrated circuits for inductive sensors. The following sections deal with present-day inductive analog proximity sensors and with the distinctive technological innovation offered by the new inductive linear displacement sensors and with miniaturization results achieved through consistent integration.
