TL;DR: In this article, a surface micro-machined inductor with its coil axis parallel to the substrate plane is presented, which exhibits record-high quality factors (Q) of over 70 at 1 GHz.
Abstract: Integrated high-Q coils are much sought after because they enable high-quality radio-frequency circuits that do not rely on off-chip discretes. We present a novel surface micro-machined inductor with its coil axis parallel to the substrate plane. Coils fabricated on standard unaltered low-resistance silicon exhibit record-high-quality factors (Q) of over 70 at 1 GHz. The devices are made by three-dimensional (3-D) self-assembly of stress-engineered structures fabricated with standard semiconductor batch processing techniques. We also designed, fabricated, and characterized silicon Bi-CMOS L-C oscillators built around these coils. Compared side by side against state-of-the-art planar spirals, they produce a 12.3 dB lower phase noise at 100 kHz offset, and 14.6 dB after normalizing to frequency and power.

TL;DR: In this paper, a radio frequency identification tag has a step-tunable inductor for tuning a parallel resonant antenna circuit of the tag to a desired frequency, where each branch is adapted for adjusting the inductance value for resonating the parallel antenna circuit to a carrier frequency of a tag interrogator/reader.
Abstract: A radio frequency identification tag having a step-tunable inductor for tuning a parallel resonant antenna circuit of the radio frequency identification tag to a desired frequency. The step-tunable inductor comprises a plurality of branches in which each branch is adapted for adjusting the step-tunable inductor to a desired inductance value for resonating the parallel antenna circuit to a carrier frequency of a tag interrogator/reader.

TL;DR: In this article, a high step-up dc-dc converter is proposed, which employs a coupled inductor and two voltage multipliers to increase the voltage gain and reduce the voltage stress on the main switch.
Abstract: A high step-up dc–dc converter is proposed in this paper. The presented converter benefits from some advantages such as high voltage gain and continuous input current, which makes it suitable for the renewable energy applications. The presented converter is based on the SEPIC converter. However, the converter voltage gain is improved by employing a coupled inductor and two voltage multipliers. A passive clamp circuit is also added to the proposed converter that increases the voltage gain and reduces the voltage stress on the main switch. Thus, a switch with low $R_{{\text{DS(on)}}}$ will be needed that decreases the conduction loss. Besides, the voltage stress on the output diode in the proposed converter is reduced, which alleviates reverse recovery problem. The steady-state analysis of the proposed converter is discussed in this paper. The analysis is verified with experimental results under the output power of 245 W.

TL;DR: In this article, a molded hearing aid of the self-containing type having a rechargeable battery disposed therein, in the form of a molded plug which will fit in the ear of the user.
Abstract: A molded hearing aid of the self-containing type having a rechargeable battery disposed therein, in the form of a molded plug which will fit in the ear of the user. A light emitting diode is disposed through the external surface of the plug and is internally connected in series with an iron core inductor with the series combination in parallel with the internal chargeable battery. A battery charger is provided having a cup for receiving the molded plug and having a multiturn coil wound around the periphery of the cup. The coil is connected into an oscillator circuit and tuned to cause the circuit to oscillate at about 30 kHz. The oscillator coil couples to the iron core inductor in the plastic plug thereby inducing a 30 kHz ac voltage across the coil. The light emitting diode rectifies the alternating current and is connected in a polarity so as to charge the internal battery of the hearing aid. As the charging current flows through the light emitting diode, the diode is illuminated indicating to the user that charging is taking place and indicating by its brillance when the hearing aid is located in its optimum position.

TL;DR: In this paper, the number of voltage levels available in PWM voltage source inverters can be increased by using a split-wound coupled inductor within each inverter leg and interleaved PWM switching of the upper and lower switches.
Abstract: The number of voltage levels available in pulsewidth modulation (PWM) voltage source inverters can be increased by using a split-wound coupled inductor within each inverter leg and interleaved PWM switching of the upper and lower switches. The magnetizing inductance of the symmetrical split-wound inductor filters the high-frequency PWM voltage differences between the upper and lower switches. The same inductor presents a three-level PWM voltage at the inverter output terminals, with the winding leakage inductance being located in series with the low-frequency output current. Deadtime PWM signal delays can be reduced as DC-rail short circuits are not possible: as a result, the quality and voltage range of the PWM output is improved. Since the inductor windings are technically exposed to high-frequency PWM AC voltages with no DC components, device voltage drops help to reduce the buildup of winding DC currents. Theoretical analysis and a sample design case are presented to illustrate how to design suitable inductors for the various topologies. Simulation and experimental results are used to illustrate the operation of the proposed inverter structures.
