Abstract: The development of zero switching loss inverters has attracted much interest for industrial applications. Two topologies for realizing zero switching losses in high-power converters are proposed. The actively clamped resonant DC link inverter uses the concept of a lossless active clamp to restrict voltage stresses to only 1.3-1.5 supply voltage. For applications demanding substantially better spectral performance, the resonant pole inverter (RPI), also called the quasi-resonant current mode inverter, is proposed as a viable topology. Using only six devices rated at supply voltage, this circuit transfers the resonant components to the AC side of each phase and thus requires additional inductor and capacitor (LC) components. On the other hand, the RPI is capable of true pulsewidth modulation (PWM) operation at high frequency as opposed to discrete pulse modulation operation found in resonant DC link invertors. >

Abstract: The results of a comprehensive investigation into the characteristics and optimization of inductors fabricated with the top-level metal of a submicron silicon VLSI process are presented. A computer program which extracts a physics-based model of microstrip components that is suitable for circuit (SPICE) simulation has been used to evaluate the effect of variations in metallization, layout geometry, and substrate parameters upon monolithic inductor performance. Three-dimensional (3-D) numerical simulations and experimental measurements of inductors were also used to benchmark the model accuracy. It is shown in this work that low inductor Q is primarily due to the restrictions imposed by the thin interconnect metallization available in most very large scale integration (VLSI) technologies, and that computer optimization of the inductor layout can be used to achieve a 50% improvement in component Q-factor over unoptimized designs.

Abstract: A sensor for measuring linear displacement has a core of magnetic material disposed for movement within a bobbin about which a coil of insulated, electrically conductive wire is wound. At least one Hall effect device is disposed about the coil. The sensor is contained with a magnetic housing. When the coil is excited by a DC power source, the direction of magnetic flux flowing through the Hall effect device is dependent upon the position of the core.

Abstract: Energy harvesting is an emerging technology with applications to handheld, portable and implantable electronics. Harvesting ambient vibration energy through piezoelectric (PE) means is a popular energy harvesting technique that can potentially supply 10 to 100's of µW of available power [1]. One of the limitations of existing PE harvesters is in their interface circuitry. Commonly used full-bridge rectifiers and voltage doublers [2] severely limit the electrical power extractable from a PE harvesting element. Further, the power consumed in the control circuits of these harvesters reduces the amount of usable electrical power. In this paper, a bias-flip rectifier that can improve upon the power extraction capability of existing full-bridge rectifiers by up to 4.2× is presented. An efficient control circuit with embedded DC-DC converters that can share their filter inductor with the bias-flip rectifier thereby reducing the volume and component count of the overall solution is demonstrated.
