Abstract: This paper proposes to merge an I/Q current-commutating mixer with a noise-canceling balun-LNA. To realize a high bandwidth, the real part of the impedance of all RF nodes is kept low, and the voltage gain is not created at RF but in baseband where capacitive loading is no problem. Thus a high RF bandwidth is achieved without using inductors for bandwidth extension. By using an I/Q mixer with 25% duty-cycle LO waveform the output IF currents have also 25% duty-cycle, causing 2 times smaller DC-voltage drop after IF filtering. This allows for a 2 times increase in the impedance level of the IF filter, rendering more voltage gain for the same supply headroom. The implemented balun-LNA-I/Q-mixer topology achieves > 18 dB conversion gain, a flat noise figure < 5.5 dB from 500 MHz to 7 GHz, IIP2 = +20 dBm and IIP3 = -3 dBm. The core circuit consumes only 16 mW from a 1.2 V supply voltage and occupies less than 0.01 mm2 in 65 nm CMOS.

Abstract: This paper presents a novel, yet simple zero-voltage switching (ZVS) interleaved boost power factor correction (PFC) ac/dc converter used to charge the traction battery of an electric vehicle from the utility mains. The proposed opology consists of a passive auxiliary circuit, placed between two phases of the interleaved front-end boost PFC converter, which provides enough current to charge and discharge the MOSFETs' output capacitors during turn-ON times. Therefore, the MOSFETs are turned ON at zero voltage. The proposed converter maintains ZVS for the universal input voltage (85 to 265 Vrms), which includes a very wide range of duty ratios (0.07-1). In addition, the control system optimizes the amount of reactive current required to guarantee ZVS during the line cycle for different load conditions. This optimization is crucial in this application since the converter may work at very light loads for a long period of time. Experimental results from a 3 kW ac/dc converter are presented in the paper to evaluate the performance of the proposed converter. The results show a considerable increase in efficiency and superior performance of the proposed converter compared to the conventional hard-switched interleaved boost PFC converter.

Abstract: A multilevel-spiral (MLS) inductor structure for implementation in VLSI interconnect technology is presented. Inductances of 8.8 and 32 nH and maximum quality-factors (Q) of /spl sim/6.8 and 3.0, respectively, are achieved in a four-level metal BiCMOS technology, with four turns at each of the two or four stacked spiral coils and with an area of 226/spl times/226 /spl mu/m/sup 2/. The comparison of the MLS inductors to different single-level-spiral (SLS) control devices shows that a MLS inductor provides the same inductance at /spl sim/50% dc resistance, but the maximum Q is typically measured at a lower frequency and the self-resonance frequency is reduced due to a high inter-wire capacitance.
