TL;DR: In this paper, the authors use context-aware camerephone devices to examine privacy decisions in mobile and online photo sharing and identify relationships between location of photo capture and photo privacy settings.
Abstract: As sharing personal media online becomes easier and widely spread, new privacy concerns emerge - especially when the persistent nature of the media and associated context reveals details about the physical and social context in which the media items were created. In a first-of-its-kind study, we use context-aware camerephone devices to examine privacy decisions in mobile and online photo sharing. Through data analysis on a corpus of privacy decisions and associated context data from a real-world system, we identify relationships between location of photo capture and photo privacy settings. Our data analysis leads to further questions which we investigate through a set of interviews with 15 users. The interviews reveal common themes in privacy considerations: security, social disclosure, identity and convenience. Finally, we highlight several implications and opportunities for design of media sharing applications, including using past privacy patterns to prevent oversights and errors.

TL;DR: The authors suggest using a trust-overlay network over multiple data centers to implement a reputation system for establishing trust between service providers and data owners.
Abstract: Trust and security have prevented businesses from fully accepting cloud platforms. To protect clouds, providers must first secure virtualized data center resources, uphold user privacy, and preserve data integrity. The authors suggest using a trust-overlay network over multiple data centers to implement a reputation system for establishing trust between service providers and data owners. Data coloring and software watermarking techniques protect shared data objects and massively distributed software modules. These techniques safeguard multi-way authentications, enable single sign-on in the cloud, and tighten access control for sensitive data in both public and private clouds.

TL;DR: This tutorial article introduces the fusion of signal processing and cryptography as an emerging paradigm to protect the privacy of users.
Abstract: In recent years, signal processing applications that deal with user-related data have aroused privacy concerns. For instance, face recognition and personalized recommendations rely on privacy-sensitive information that can be abused if the signal processing is executed on remote servers or in the cloud. In this tutorial article, we introduce the fusion of signal processing and cryptography as an emerging paradigm to protect the privacy of users. While service providers cannot access directly the content of the encrypted signals, the data can still be processed in encrypted form to perform the required signal processing task. The solutions for processing encrypted data are designed using cryptographic primitives like homomorphic cryptosystems and secure multiparty computation (MPC).

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors examined the relationship between online consumers' response to privacy concerns using a national sample of individuals with personal e-mail accounts and their overall level of concern was subsequently correlated with the frequency that respondents adopted seven different online behaviors.
Abstract: Attitudes and opinions about online advertising practices and consumer privacy concerns have been studied in both the academic and popular press. However, online consumers' response to privacy concerns have not been studied. This study examines this relationship using a national sample of individuals with personal e-mail accounts. Respondents' concerns with a series of situations which effect privacy online were assessed. This overall level of concern was subsequently correlated with the frequency that respondents adopted seven different online behaviors. Analysis demonstrates that the frequency of adopting five of the seven behaviors increased as respondents' privacy concern increased. Specifically, as privacy concern increased, respondents reported that they were more likely to provide incomplete information to web sites, to notify Internet Service Providers (ISPs) about unsolicited e-mail, to request removal from mailing lists, and to send a “flame” to online entities sending unsolicited e-mai...
