TL;DR: This work proposes and characterize experimentally a new source of optical frequency combs for performing multi-heterodyne spectrometry based on a frequency-shifting loop seeded with a continuous-wave monochromatic laser.
Abstract: We propose and characterize experimentally a new source of optical frequency combs for performing multi-heterodyne spectrometry. This comb modality is based on a frequency-shifting loop seeded with a continuous-wave (CW) monochromatic laser. The comb lines are generated by successive passes of the CW laser through an acousto-optic frequency shifter. We report the generation of frequency combs with more than 1500 mutually coherent lines, without resorting to non-linear broadening phenomena or external electronic modulation. The comb line spacing is easily reconfigurable from tens of MHz down to the kHz region. We first use a single acousto-optic frequency comb to conduct self-heterodyne interferometry with a high frequency resolution (500 kHz). By increasing the line spacing to 80 MHz, we demonstrate molecular spectroscopy on the sub-millisecond time scale. In order to reduce the detection bandwidth, we subsequently implement an acousto-optic dual-comb spectrometer with the aid of two mutually coherent frequency shifting loops. In each architecture, the potentiality of acousto-optic frequency combs for spectroscopy is validated by spectral measurements of hydrogen cyanide in the near-infrared region.

TL;DR: The existence of a novel type of the flat-top dissipative solitonic pulses, "platicons", in microresonators with normal group velocity dispersion (GVD), is predicted and methods to generate these platicons from cw pump are proposed.
Abstract: We predict the existence of a novel type of the flat-top dissipative solitonic pulses, "platicons", in microresonators with normal group velocity dispersion (GVD). We propose methods to generate these platicons from cw pump. Their duration may be altered significantly by tuning the pump frequency. The transformation of a discrete energy spectrum of dark solitons of the Lugiato-Lefever equation into a quasicontinuous spectrum of platicons is demonstrated. Generation of similar structures is also possible with bi-harmonic, phase/amplitude modulated pump or via laser injection locking.

TL;DR: A novel analysis of oscillator injection locking that incorporates all features but uses only basic mathematical and circuit theory concepts is presented and a graphical procedure for finding the nonlinear relationship between injection amplitude and lock range is developed that is both accurate and insightful.
Abstract: Simple, accessible and intuitive treatments of oscillator injection locking, that at the same time maintain rigour especially with regard to nonlinearities, appear to be lacking in the literature. We present a novel analysis that incorporates all these features but uses only basic mathematical and circuit theory concepts. We develop a graphical procedure for finding the nonlinear relationship between injection amplitude and lock range that is both accurate and insightful. We also provide freely downloadable MATLAB scripts implementing our analysis and graphical procedures. These scripts can be easily adapted to any negative-resistance LC oscillator and used for convenient and accurate exploration of injection locking and other properties

TL;DR: In this article, an all-optical inverter using transverse mode switching of a 1.55/spl mu/m vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser is demonstrated.
Abstract: An all-optical inverter using transverse-mode switching of a 1.55-/spl mu/m vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser is demonstrated. When an external light is injected to a first high-order mode, the output power of the fundamental mode is strongly suppressed due to injection locking resulting in a large extinction ratio of over 20 dB. Waveform inversion is demonstrated for the input signal of a 5-GHz sinusoidal wave.
