21 Jun 2020TL;DR: An interactive, tablet-based learning platform with a multi-step math task designed using Common Core State Standards shows that embedding learning activities into narratives boosted children's engagement as evaluated by coding video responses and surveys, and the integration of a tutoring chatbot improved learning outcomes on the assessment.
Abstract: A key challenge in education is effectively engaging children in learning activities We investigated how a narrative story impacts engagement and learning, as well as how feedback can provide further benefits To do so, we created an interactive, tablet-based learning platform with a multi-step math task designed using Common Core State Standards Subjects completed a pretest and then were assigned to a condition, either one of three variations of the system (narratives, narratives with hints, and narratives with a tutoring chatbot using wizard-of-oz techniques) or a control system that has children complete the same learning task without narratives nor feedback, before the subjects completed a post test 72 children in US grades 3--5 participated Our results showed that embedding learning activities into narratives boosted children's engagement as evaluated by coding video responses and surveys, and the integration of a tutoring chatbot improved learning outcomes on the assessment These results provide evidence that a narrative-based tutoring system with chatbot-mediated help may support effective learning experiences for children

01 May 1998TL;DR: The software architecture for TAP-1-a simple inquiry tutoring shell based on the theory of inquiry teaching, which has successfully demonstrated the inquiry teaching style through an inquiry planner within an intelligent tutoring system shell, has been described.
Abstract: In the tutoring agenda planner (TAP) project, we study the feasibility of implementing the inquiry teaching method of Collins and Stevens (1991) as tutoring software. This paper describes the software architecture for TAP-1-a simple inquiry tutoring shell based on the theory of inquiry teaching. The inquiry teaching style has the objective of teaching scientific reasoning skills through a "localized" sequence of well-planned inquiry dialogue. To complement the "localized" dialogue planning framework inherent in the theory of inquiry teaching, the TAP-1 architecture has adopted the "global" curriculum planning technique. TAP-1 has successfully demonstrated the inquiry teaching style through an inquiry planner within an intelligent tutoring system shell. In addition, PADI-a geography tutor that delivers inquiry teaching style-has been implemented using TAP-1. A group of students performed well in an evaluation activity of the tutor. They also foresaw the potential of TAP for achieving the aim of cultivating scientific thoughts.

TL;DR: On several dependent measures, interleaving multiple graphical representations led to better learning results than blocking multiple graphical Representation Control conditions.
Abstract: Providing learners with multiple representations of the learning content has been shown to enhance learning outcomes. When designing problem sequences with multiple representations, designers of intelligent tutoring systems must decide how to schedule the representations. Prior research on contextual interference has demonstrated that interleaving different types of learning tasks can foster a deep understanding of the underlying concepts. Do the same advantages apply to interleaving representations? In a classroom experiment, we compared four conditions that varied the practice schedules of multiple graphical representations between interleaving and blocking. The multiple-representation conditions were compared to three single-representation control conditions. During their regular classroom instruction, 290 4 and 5-grade students worked for five hours with versions of an intelligent tutoring system for fractions. On several dependent measures, interleaving multiple graphical representations led to better learning results than blocking multiple graphical representations. Findings from a think-aloud study give insight into the underlying cognitive processes.

TL;DR: The Intelligent Tutoring System was evaluated by a group of users and the results were more than satisfactory in terms of the quality of the material and the design of the system.
Abstract: This paper describes an Intelligent Tutoring System for helping users with ADO.NET called ADO-Tutor. The Intelligent Tutoring System was designed and developed using (ITSB) authoring tool for building intelligent educational systems. The user learns through the intelligent tutoring system ADO.NET, the technology used by Microsoft.NET to connect to databases. The material includes lessons, examples, and questions. Through the feedback provided by the intelligent tutoring system, the user's understanding of the material is assessed, and accordingly can be guided to different difficulty level of exercises and/or the lessons. The Intelligent Tutoring System was evaluated by a group of users and the results were more than satisfactory in terms of the quality of the material and the design of the system.

26 Jun 2017TL;DR: A novel Arabic CITS that adapts the learning styles VAK for autistic children to enhance their learning is presented, aimed at children with autism who have reached a basic competency with the mechanics of Arabic writing.
Abstract: This paper presents a novel Arabic Conversational Intelligent Tutoring System (CITS) that adapts the learning styles VAK for autistic children to enhance their learning. The proposed CITS architecture uses a combination of Arabic Pattern Matching and Arabic Short Text Similarity to extract the responses from the resources. The new Arabic CITS, known as LANA, is aimed at children with autism (10 to 16 years old) who have reached a basic competency with the mechanics of Arabic writing. This paper describes the architecture of LANA and its components. The experimental methodology is explained in order to conduct a pilot study in future.
