TL;DR: In this paper, a method and apparatus for displaying images is presented in which intra-frame encoding is performed on image data at N frame intervals, where the thinned-out frames are encoded by prediction from the preceding frame codes.
Abstract: A method and apparatus for displaying images is presented in which intra-frame encoding is performed on image data at N frame intervals, where the thinned-out frames are encoded by prediction from the preceding frame codes. The frame being decoded is identified when an instruction for temporarily stopping a moving image and displaying it as a still image is given by an operation panel. If the frame being decoded is not an interpolative frame, the decoded image data is displayed when the decoding operation is complete. If, on the other hand, the frame being decoded is an interpolative frame, the intra-frame encoded frame nearest to the frame being decoded, or a predictive frame, is displayed.

TL;DR: In this paper, an improved motion picture coding scheme is described which provides the benefits of both sub-band coding and motion compensation thereby providing greater degrees of compression than would be obtained using either of these techniques separately.
Abstract: An improved motion picture coding scheme is described which provides the benefits of both sub-band coding and motion compensation thereby providing greater degrees of compression than would be obtained using either of these techniques separately. The system generates high and low frequency frames from each pair of frames in the original motion picture. The high frequency represents the difference between the first and second frames of the motion picture. The pixels of the low frequency frame are either the average of two corresponding pixels, one from each of the original frames, or a value derived from a single pixel in the first frame. In the later case, the derived value is chosen to minimize artifacts that could hamper further compression of the low-frequency frame based on sub-band coding.

05 May 2004TL;DR: In this article, a frame interpolating apparatus is described, which includes a calculation unit for performing a SAD Map calculation among input video signals with respect to a previous frame and a next frame and performing block matching, a determination unit for determining from the block-matched frame whether a video is repeated periodically and is changing fast, and an interpolation unit for selectively calculating a pixel value of an interpolated frame according to a determination result of the determination unit.
Abstract: Disclosed is a frame interpolating apparatus and a method thereof used at a frame rate conversion. The frame interpolating apparatus includes a calculation unit for performing a SAD Map calculation among inputted video signals with respect to a previous frame and a next frame and performing block matching, a determination unit for determining from the block-matched frame whether a video is repeated periodically and is changing fast, and an interpolation unit for selectively calculating a pixel value of an interpolated frame according to a determination result of the determination unit. Accordingly, the interpolated frame is vivid and clear, hence, removing the conventional blurring problem.

23 May 2005TL;DR: Efficient methods aimed at speed up of motion estimation and mode decision are proposed and Experimental results show that the proposed algorithms can save a coding time of about 88% compared with the reference software JM80 while keeping the video quality.
Abstract: The H.264 video coding standard adopts different coding schemes like variable block sizes and multiple reference frames for motion estimation. Hence, H.264/AVC provides gains in compression efficiency of up to 50% over a wide range of bit rates and video resolutions compared to previous standards. However, these features incur a considerable increase in encoder complexity, mainly with regards to motion estimation and mode decision. In this paper, efficient methods aimed at speed up of motion estimation and mode decision are proposed. Experimental results show that our proposed algorithms can save a coding time of about 88% compared with the reference software JM80 while keeping the video quality.

05 Dec 2012TL;DR: In this paper, a method, computer program product, and system are provided for multi-threaded video encoding. The method includes the steps of generating a set of motion vectors in a hardware video encoder based on a current frame of a video stream and a reference frame of the video stream, dividing the current frame into a number of slices, encoding each slice based on the set of vectors, and combining the encoded slices to generate an encoded bitstream.
