TL;DR: It is concluded that computational complexity of three step search is almost 10 times less than full search algorithm while PSNR of threestep search is less only by one-two percent than fullsearch method.
Abstract: The motion estimation and compensation technique is widely used for interframe video coding applications, but the real-time high quality motion estimation is not easy due to its enormous computations. There are many computional effective block motion estimation algorithms but with trade-off between the algorithm accuracy and algorithm speed. Different block motion estimation algorithms are available, which include full search or exhaustive search algorithm, the fast search algorithm, such as three step search, two dimentional logarithmic search, binary search, etc. Also motion estimation in DCT domain & motion estimation in wavelet domain give better performance. DCT based motion estimation has low computational complexity than full search block matching approach. Wavelet based coding has better performance than traditional DCT based coding, since it reduces artifacts in the DCT coding. In this paper, all above algorithms are explained & implementation of full search motion estimation & three step search motion estimation is done. Also comparison between these two algorithms is shown on basis of computational complexity & PSNR. From the results, it is concluded that computational complexity of three step search is almost 10 times less than full search algorithm while PSNR of three step search is less only by one-two percent than full search method .

TL;DR: In this article, the motion compensator caches the neighborhood macroblocks from the anchor frame for each macroblock from the current frame. But the caching may be increased by altering the order in which the macroblocks are processed.
Abstract: A video encoder typically includes a preprocessor, a frame store, a motion compensator, and a compression module. The preprocessor converts an incoming digital video signal to image macroblocks. The frame store stores the macroblocks from anchor frames, and the motion compensator searches neighborhoods in anchor frames for best matches to macroblocks from a current frame. The compression module receives a vector from the motion compensator indicative of the best match and uses it to compress the macroblocks from the current frame. The compressed macroblocks are provided as components of a compressed video output bitstream. To perform the neighborhood search, the motion compensator accesses many neighborhood macroblocks from the anchor frame for each macroblock from the current frame. To reduce the number of memory accesses, the motion compensator caches the neighborhood macroblocks. Since the search neighborhoods for adjacent macroblocks overlap, caching is effective. The effectiveness of caching may be increased by altering the order in which macroblocks from the current anchor frame are processed. This advantageously reduces the number of neighbourhood macroblocks from the anchor frame added to the cache for each neighborhood search, thereby providing for reduced requirement for memory bandwidth of the frame store.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors proposed a method for motion reconstruction from inter-frame feature correspondences of a singular video stream using a motion library, which comprises the detailed information on the whole processes from images to motions.
Abstract: The present invention relates to the motion reconstruction method from inter-frame feature correspondences of a singular video stream using a motion library. The motion library is constructed through a motion capture system which is becoming more actively used or skilled animators. The present invention comprises the detailed information on the whole processes from images to motions. These processes are very simple to implement and straight forward. The total movement of a motion can be effectively inferenced and this technology can directly used for various fields in which human motions are produced from the images.

TL;DR: An adaptive frame type selection algorithm for motion compensation, which is applied to a low bit rate video coding using MPEG-1, shows that the adaptive reference frame positioning scheme compares favorably with the fixed positioning scheme.
Abstract: In this paper we present an adaptive frame type selection algorithm for motion compensation, which is applied to a low bit rate video coding using MPEG-1. In the adaptive scheme, the number of reference frames for motion compensation is determined by a scene change detection algorithm using temporal segmentation. To choose for the distance measure for the temporal segmentation, three histogram-based measures and one variance-based measure were tested and compared. The reference frame positions may be determined by an exhaustive search algorithm which is computationally complex. The complexity can be reduced by using a binary search algorithm which exploits the monotonicity of the distance measure with respect to the reference frame interval. The target bit allocation for each picture type in a group of pictures is adjusted to allow a variable number of reference frames with the constraint of constant channel bit rate. Simulation results show that the adaptive reference frame positioning scheme compares favorably with the fixed positioning scheme at the bit rates of 64 kb/s and 14.4 kb/s.

TL;DR: In this paper, an initial analysis on the macroblock homogeneity is performed to quickly reduce the number of inter modes for which motion estimation and rate distortion calculation are to be performed.
Abstract: An inter mode for encoding a video macroblock is selected. An initial analysis on the macroblock homogeneity is performed to quickly reduce the number of inter modes for which motion estimation and rate distortion calculation are to be performed. An inter mode is selected based on these calculations and sub-pixel motion estimation, at various sub-pixel interpolation granularities, is performed only on the selected inter mode. Sub-pixel motion estimation may be skipped for macroblocks that exhibit relatively low distortion at the integer pixel level.
