30 Aug 1994TL;DR: In this paper, the macroblocks of received video frames are identified, selected, processed and stored to facilitate later combination into a single fully intra-coded composite video frame suitable for use during VTR trick play operation.
Abstract: Method and apparatus for generating a fully intra-coded video frame from a received progressive refresh bitstream representing a series of inter-coded video frames. Intra-coded macroblocks of received video frames are identified, selected, processed and stored to facilitate later combination into a single fully intra-coded composite video frame suitable for use during VTR trick play operation. As part of the intra-coded macroblock selection process, in various embodiments, the large sets of adjacent macroblocks are given priority over previously selected macroblocks that correspond to non-adjacent positions within a video frame or which correspond to a smaller set of adjacent video frames. As part of the macroblock processing performed prior to storage of selected intra-coded macroblocks, the amount of data used to represent each intra-coded macroblock is reduced and the macroblocks are processed so as to be represented in a consistent manner which facilitates the subsequent combination of intra-coded macroblocks from different frames into a single low resolution frame suitable for use during trick play operation.

25 May 2003TL;DR: A novel fast multi-frame selection method (FMFME) is proposed for H.264 video coding that can efficiently reduce the computational cost up to 76% with similar quality and bit-rate.
Abstract: The latest under development video coding standard, H.264, uses multiple reference frames to improve the rate-distortion performance. However, the motion estimation process involved is computational intensive and increases linearly with the number of allowed reference frames. In this paper, a novel fast multi-frame selection method (FMFME) is proposed for H.264 video coding. The proposed FMFME can efficiently reduce the computational cost up to 76% with similar quality and bit-rate.

08 Apr 1994TL;DR: In this paper, a motion vector detecting apparatus adapted for detecting motion vectors in motion prediction of an interlaced moving picture comprised of sets of picture blocks consisting of a plurality of pixels.
Abstract: A motion vector detecting apparatus adapted for detecting motion vectors in motion prediction of an interlaced moving picture comprised of sets of picture blocks consisting of a plurality of pixels. In the case of carrying out five motion predictive error calculations of motion vector from current frame to frame to which reference is made, motion vector from odd field of current frame to odd field of frame to which reference is made, motion vector from odd field of current frame to even field of frame to which reference is made, motion vector from even field of current frame to odd field of frame to which reference is made, and motion vector from even field of current frame to even field of frame to which reference is made, output results of accumulators for carrying out calculation of motion vectors for field are used as they are, thus to carry out calculation of motion vectors for frame at the same time.

TL;DR: This paper addresses the importance of phase and focuses on the design of scalable video coding algorithms within the OMCWC framework to demonstrate that the class of overomplete MCP/MCTF coders are capable of achieving comparable performance to other competing interframe wavelet coders.
Abstract: Recently, there have been a flurry of works on overcomplete motion compensated wavelet coding (OMCWC). In this paper, we address the importance of phase and focus on the design of scalable video coding algorithms within the OMCWC framework. Specifically, our new contributions consist of the following three components: (1) efficient block motion estimation techniques in the wavelet domain including hierarchical and fractional-pel block matching, (2) extend overcomplete motion compensated prediction (MCP) into overcomplete motion compensated temporal filtering (MCTF) to achieve temporal scalability (3) context modeling strategies for embedded quantization and entropy coding of 3D wavelet coefficients. Experiment results are used to demonstrate that the class of overomplete MCP/MCTF coders are capable of achieving comparable performance to other competing interframe wavelet coders.

TL;DR: The proposed key frame extraction method for video copyright protection has advantage in computation complexity and robustness on several video formats, video resolution, and so on.
Abstract: The paper proposes a key frame extraction method for video copyright protection. The fast and robust method is based on frame difference with low level features, including color feature and structure feature. A two-stage method is used to extract accurate key frames to cover the content for the whole video sequence. Firstly, an alternative sequence is got based on color characteristic difference between adjacent frames from original sequence. Secondly, by analyzing structural characteristic difference between adjacent frames from the alternative sequence, the final key frame sequence is obtained. And then, an optimization step is added based on the number of final key frames in order to ensure the effectiveness of key frame extraction. Compared with the previous methods, the proposed method has advantage in computation complexity and robustness on several video formats, video resolution, and so on.
