Abstract: UTRAN long term evolution is currently being standardized in 3GPP with the aim of more than twice the capacity over high-speed packet access. The chosen multiple access for uplink is single carrier FDMA, which avoids the intra-cell interference typical of CDMA systems, but it is still sensitive to inter-cell interference. As a result, the role of the power control becomes decisive to provide the required SINR, while controlling at the same time the interference caused to neighboring cells. This is the target of the fractional power control (FPC) algorithm lately approved in 3GPP. This paper evaluates in detail the impact of a FPC scheme on the SINR and interference distributions in order to provide a sub-optimal configuration tuned for both interference- and noise-limited scenarios.

Abstract: The interference of Laguerre-Gaussian beams carrying orbital angular momentum was demonstrated in Young's double-slit geometry. Double-slit interference is shown to be affected by the azimuthal phase dependence of a Laguerre-Gaussian beam. This interference provides new insight into the helical phase structure of the Laguerre-Gaussian beam and has potential applications for measuring the orbital angular momentum of an arbitrary wavefront.

Abstract: In this paper we explore the idea of using cognitive radios to reuse locally unused spectrum for their own transmissions. We impose the constraint that they cannot general e unacceptable levels of interference to licensed systems on the same frequency. Using received SNR as a proxy for distance, we prove that a cognitive radio can vary its transmit power while maintaining a guarantee of service to primary users. We consider the aggregate interference caused by multiple cognitive radios and show that aggregation causes a change in the effective decay rate of the interference. We examine the effects of heterogeneous propagation path loss functions and justify the feasibility of multiple secondary users with dynamic transmit powers. Finally, we prove the fundamental constraint on a cognitive radio's transmit power is the minimum SNR it can detect and explore the effect of this power cap.

Abstract: We present conceptual designs of an emerging class of logic gates, including NOT, NOR, and NAND, that use traveling spin waves (SWs) in the gigahertz range and that are based on a Mach–Zehnder-type SW (MZSW) interferometer. In this MZSW interferometer, logical input and output signals are achievable by the application of currents in order to control the phases that are accumulated by propagating SWs and by either destructive or constructive SW interference, respectively. In this article, the operation mechanism underlying a NOT gate function using a single MZSW interferometer is described and demonstrated numerically. The MZSW interferometer can itself become a NOT gate and be combined in its parallel and serial configurations to form NAND and NOR gates, respectively, which represent emerging classes of universal logic functions for microwave information signal processing.

Abstract: We describe a simulation study of a cellular system using multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) antenna techniques along with adaptive modulation and aggressive frequency reuse. We show for the case of 3 transmit and 3 receive antennas, how much MIMO systems outperform systems with receive-diversity-only when noise dominates. When co-channel interference from surrounding cells dominates, the differences shrink, as do the absolute numbers. We quantify these reductions for the specific cases studied, and discuss further areas of research.
