Abstract: We consider a problem of interference between two independent condensates that lack true long-range order. We show that their interference pattern contains information about correlation functions within each condensate. As an example, we analyze the interference between a pair of one-dimensional interacting Bose liquids. We find universal scaling of the average fringe contrast with system size and temperature that depends only on the Luttinger parameter. Moreover, the full distribution of the fringe contrast, which is also equivalent to the full counting statistics of the interfering atoms, changes with interaction strength and lends information on high-order correlation functions. We also demonstrate that the interference between two-dimensional condensates at finite temperature can be used as a direct probe of the Kosterlitz–Thouless transition. Finally, we discuss the generalization of our results to describe the interference of a periodic array of independent fluctuating condensates.

Abstract: A new femtosecond time-resolved interferometer was developed that utilizes interference fringes in the frequency domain to obtain simultaneously difference phase spectra (DPS) and difference transmission spectra with a multichannel spectrometer. For the first time to our knowledge, transient oscillations were observed in DPS and the spectral shift of a probe pulse was time resolved together with the rise in DPS, which is clear evidence for induced phase modulation in absorptive materials.

Abstract: The authors propose and investigate an adaptive canceller of intersymbol and cochannel interference due to channel distortion and cross-correlation among pseudonoise sequences assigned to individual users of a DS-SSMA (direct-sequence spread-spectrum multiple-access) system. In order to implement a local area network (LAN) by using a power line installed in a building wall as a transmission channel, the authors have investigated utilization of DS-SSMA which has advantages such as robustness against narrow-band interference and noise and realization of asynchronous code division multiple access. In a power line, however, restriction of transmission bandwidth for communications makes it difficult to suppress cochannel interference and the channel is also time-varying due to fluctuation of loads. Since the proposed canceller adaptively eliminates cochannel interference as well as intersymbol interference, it can facilitate synchronization and increase the number of the simultaneously accessing users on a power line with restricted processing gain. The error probability in the output of the canceller is theoretically calculated for the steady-state case by using a Markov model. Computer simulations illustrate stable convergence properties of the canceller. >

Abstract: A multiple antenna downlink channel where limited channel feedback is available to the transmitter is considered. In a vector downlink channel (single antenna at each receiver), the transmit antenna array can be used to transmit separate data streams to multiple receivers only if the transmitter has very accurate channel knowledge, i.e., if there is high-rate channel feedback from each receiver. In this work it is shown that channel feedback requirements can be significantly reduced if each receiver has a small number of antennas and appropriately combines its antenna outputs. A combining method that minimizes channel quantization error at each receiver, and thereby minimizes multi-user interference, is proposed and analyzed. This technique is shown to outperform traditional techniques such as maximum-ratio combining because minimization of interference power is more critical than maximization of signal power in the multiple antenna downlink. Analysis is provided to quantify the feedback savings, and the technique is seen to work well with user selection and is also robust to receiver estimation error.

Abstract: This paper investigates the performance of a cognitive hybrid satellite–terrestrial network, where the primary satellite communication network and the secondary terrestrial mobile network coexist, provided that the interference temperature constraint is satisfied. By using the Meijer-G functions, the exact closed-form expression of the outage probability (OP) for the secondary network is first derived. Then, the asymptotic result in a high-signal-to-noise-ratio (SNR) regime is presented to reveal the diversity order and coding gain of the considered system. Finally, computer simulations are carried out to confirm the theoretical results and reveal that a more loose interference constraint or heavier shadowing severity of a satellite interference link leads to a reduced OP, whereas stronger satellite interference power poses a detrimental effect on the outage performance.
