TL;DR: In this paper, the authors systematically review and critically examine 72 journal articles published from 1980 to 2012 on the internationalization of family firms and propose an integrative theoretical model integrating the concept of socioemotional wealth with the revised Uppsala model.
Abstract: This article systematically reviews and critically examines 72 journal articles published (from 1980 to 2012) on the internationalization of family firms. Stemming from existing literature, core aspects and main gaps are identified. We aim to overcome the inconclusiveness of findings of previous research by offering an integrative theoretical model integrating the concept of socioemotional wealth with the revised Uppsala model. Our framework helps understand behaviors of internationalizing family firms by focusing on when and how they internationalize, especially related to risk attitudes, the role of knowledge and networks. Ultimately, we provide future research themes flowing from our suggested model.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors present the preliminary results of a large-scale survey which examined Internet marketing applications in the internationalisation of UK SMEs and found that although there are some examples of innovative practice, few SMEs are utilising the full potential of the World Wide Web (WWW) in international marketing.
Abstract: This paper presents the preliminary results of a large‐scale survey which examined Internet marketing applications in the inter‐nationalisation of UK SMEs. Although there are some examples of innovative practice, few UK SMEs are utilising the full potential of the World Wide Web (WWW) in international marketing. In this respect, practice in the UK lags several years behind that in the US. Given that the Internet will have a revolutionary impact on the conduct of international trade, a major education and training initiative is required to improve knowledge and understanding in this area and to encourage more effective use of the Internet to support SME internationalisation. In the absence of such an initiative, a further decline in the UK's international competitive position can be expected as other nations embrace the global marketing opportunities made possible by the Web.

TL;DR: The authors developed a multi-country, dynamic general equilibrium model of product innovation and international trade to study the creation of comparative advantage through research and development and the evolution of world trade over tune.
Abstract: We develop a multi-country, dynamic general equilibrium model of product innovation and international trade to study the creation of comparative advantage through research and development and the evolution of world trade over tune. In our model, firms must incur resource costs to introduce new products and forward-looking potential producers conduct R&D and enter the product market whenever profit opportunities exist Trade has both intra- industry and inter-industry components, and the different incentives that face agents in different countries for investment and savings decisions give rise to Intertemporal trade. We derive results on the dynamics of trade patterns and trade volume, and on the temporal emergence of multinational corporations

TL;DR: In this article, the authors argue that internationalization is more complex than envisioned by this index and suggest that further refinement of the construct is necessary before constructing indices, and they also suggest that an index measure of the internationalization construct is superior to single variable measures on psychometric, content validity, criterion validity, reliability, and utilitarian grounds.
Abstract: Sullivan's [1994] suggestion that an index measure of the internationalization construct is superior to single-variable measures is critiqued on psychometric, content validity, criterion validity, reliability, and utilitarian grounds. We argue that internationalization is more complex than envisioned by this index and suggest that further refinement of the construct is necessary before constructing indices.

TL;DR: It is suggested that innovator position, market awareness, niche operation, and internationalization should have positive impacts on SMTEs' profitability, but the empirical results partially agree with, and partially dissent from, the propositions.
Abstract: This paper investigates the profitability determinants of small- and medium-sized enterprises in high-tech industries. Literature review suggests that innovator position, market awareness, niche operation, and internationalization should have positive impacts on SMTEs' profitability. However, the empirical results partially agree with, and partially dissent from, the propositions. Copyright © 2003 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
