Abstract: We survey recent research on emerging markets (EM) within the fields of economics, finance, international business and management. To do this, we reconfiguring the Journal of Economic Literature (JEL) classification system to provide a comprehensive list of the topics that have been studied, and we combine it with the main journal ranking methodologies to identify the journals in which significant contributions to EM research have been disseminated. We highlight the areas of greatest interest and those that have received relatively less attention to date. The suggested topics for future research include: Data and methods; market efficiency, risk-adjusted returns and risk premia; exchange rate volatility and firm-level exposures; classification systems, clusters and networks; firm-level internationalization; international business strategy; attracting and benefiting from FDI; corporate and institutional governance; and behavioral perspectives, culture and the demise of the representative agent.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors investigated the relationship between internationalization and performance of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) from newly industrialized economies (NIEs) and found that a specific level of internationalization corresponds to maximum profitability.
Abstract: In light of the lack of empirical evidence regarding issues of internationalization as they affect small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) from newly-industrialized economies (NIEs), this study aims to expand the applicability of existent internationalization theories. So far, such theories have largely been developed with MNCs from industrialized economies in mind. In examining a 1996 sample of 1,419 Taiwanese SMEs, we found that the relationship between internationalization and performance could be graphically depicted as one of inverted U-shaped curvilinearity, and that a specific level of internationalization corresponded to maximum profitability. Our empirical findings also confirmed a relationship of U-shaped curvilinearity between advertising investment and performance, indicating that a minimum level of investment is required in order for advertising to be effective. Investments in research and development (R&D) were also shown to be positively associated with firm performance. The external validity of our internationalization theories regarding SMEs from NIEs was generally supported, though some modifications allowing for consideration of the particular context of individual SMEs will ultimately become a necessity.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors present a comprehensive assessment and evaluation of the literature in the field of a firm's internationalization based on a behavioral paradigm and propose a model for the retail internationalization process which could serve as a basis for future empirical investigations of international retail expansion.

TL;DR: The authors argue that not all territories have the same capacity to maximize the benefits and opportunities and minimize the risks linked to globalization, and that the interactions of these forces in the close geographical proximity of large urban areas give shape to a much more complex geography of the world economy.
Abstract: Thomas Friedman (2005, The World Is Flat: A Brief History of the Twenty-First Century. New York: Farrar, Straus, and Giroux) argues that the expansion of trade, the internationalization of firms, the galloping process of outsourcing and the possibility of networking are creating a ‘flat world’: a level playing field where individuals are empowered and better off. This paper challenges this view of the world by arguing that not all territories have the same capacity to maximize the benefits and opportunities and minimize the risks linked to globalization. Numerous forces are coalescing in order to provoke the emergence of urban ‘mountains’ where wealth, economic activity and innovative capacity agglomerate. The interactions of these forces in the close geographical proximity of large urban areas give shape to a much more complex geography of the world economy.
