TL;DR: Examining the international collaborations of Italian university researchers for the period 2001–2005 shows that both research productivity and average quality of output have positive effects on the degree of international collaboration achieved by a scientist.
Abstract: Policy makers, at various levels of governance, generally encourage the development of research collaboration. However the underlying determinants of collaboration are not completely clear. In particular, the literature lacks studies that, taking the individual researcher as the unit of analysis, attempt to understand if and to what extent the researcher's scientific performance might impact on his/her degree of collaboration with foreign colleagues. The current work examines the international collaborations of Italian university researchers for the period 2001---2005, and puts them in relation to each individual's research performance. The results of the investigation, which assumes co-authorship as proxy of research collaboration, show that both research productivity and average quality of output have positive effects on the degree of international collaboration achieved by a scientist.

TL;DR: In this article, a typology of small and medium-sized international firms defined by the rapidity and extent of their internationalization is presented, and the firms are compared on competitive profile, international motivation, behavior, and performance.
Abstract: ■ The remarkable increase in heterogeneity among international firms in the past decade constitutes a challenge to traditional thinking about the internationalization process of firms. ■ This paper contributes to the literature by offering a typology of small and medium-sized international firms defined by the rapidity and extent of their internationalization. The firms are compared on competitive profile, international motivation, behavior, and performance. Implications for managers, scholars and policy-makes are also discussed.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors present a literature review and a survey which show the following main results: first, R&D and technology have become key cornerstones of corporate and business strategy, and there is a growing tendency to acquire technology from external sources throughout the sample.
Abstract: This contribution analyses main changes in the strategic management of technology of the world's most technology-intensive companies from western Europe, North America and Japan. The results presented here are based on a literature review and a survey which show the following main results: first, R&D and technology have become key cornerstones of corporate and business strategy. Second, there is a growing tendency to acquire technology from external sources throughout the sample. Third, internationalization of R&D plays a very important role in the strategies of the large companies investigated and the data shows that it will certainly gain further momentum. However, internationalization of R&D is confined to the Triad regions and is not "global". Based on our analysis, cornerstones of a future generation of R&D/technology management are developed.

TL;DR: In this article, the role of the corporate human resources function has been neglected, particularly in the context of the international firm, and it has been argued that the more rapid pace of internationalization and globalization leads to a more strategic role for HRM and changes in the content of HRM.
Abstract: There has been considerable research on the issues of board-level representation by personnel/HR directors and senior HR managers' involvement in strategic decision making. Since the early 1990s there has been a growing interest in international HRM, reflecting the growing recognition that the effective management of human resources internationally is a major determinant of success or failure in international business. There is also evidence that HR constraints often limit the effective implementation of international business strategies. More recently, it has been argued that the more rapid pace of internationalization and globalization leads to a more strategic role for HRM as well as changes in the content of HRM. Yet, while there have been some attempts to integrate international corporate strategy and human resource strategy, surprisingly, the role of the corporate human resources function has been neglected, particularly in the context of the international firm. This article seeks to redress the bal...
