Abstract: The growing consensus regarding the importance of interpersonal process in psychotherapy, as well as of interpersonal factors in self-definition, has underscored the relevance of examining patient interpersonal functioning as it relates to the development of the therapeutic alliance. This study examined the relationship of patient pretreatment interpersonal functioning (as measured by the Inventory of Interpersonal Problems and the Million Clinical Multiaxial Inventory) to the therapeutic alliance (as measured early in treatment by a patient self-report version of the Working Alliance Inventory). On the basis of an interpersonal circumplex interpretation, the results generally indicated that friendly-submissive interpersonal problems were positively related to the development of aspects of the alliance and that hostile-dominant problems were negatively related to the development of aspects of the alliance early in short-term cognitive therapy.

Abstract: This study investigated student perceptions of control, trust, and intimacy as dimensions of teacher‐student relationships, and. the correlation between these relational variables and reports of learning. Control, trust, and intimacy are viewed as core dimensions of interpersonal relationships, and it is hypothesized that students who engage in out of class communication have relationships that are more interpersonal in nature than students who do not engage in out of class communication with teachers. This hypothesis was supported. Additionally, students who perceived their teachers as exhibiting higher levels of shared control, trust, and intimacy reported greater learning.

Abstract: This paper develops a framework of the role of interpersonal interactions in the labor market. Effective interpersonal interactions involve caring and directness. The ability to perform these tasks varies with personality and the importance of these tasks varies across jobs. An assignment model shows that people are most productive in jobs that match their style. An oversupply of one attribute relative to the other reduces wages for people who are better with the attribute in greater supply. We present evidence that youth sociability affects job assignment in adulthood. The returns to interpersonal interactions are consistent with the assignment model.
