Abstract: The safety factor method is still widely used in mechanical design up to now for easy,but it has many disadvantages compared with the reliability design.The reliability design introduees the reliability theory into mechanical design and conquers the blindness of the safety factor method due to diflerent people may take diferent value of saftey factor.Based on stress-strength interference model,the relationship of average safety factor and reliability is derived when the distributions of stress and strength are subordinated to normal distribution or others,and then the reliability design method based on average safety factor is proposed.It is shown through example that the reliability design method is feasible and useful to improve the design level for mechanical parts and reduce their cost too.
