Abstract: Two one-pot multicomponent synthetic methods for highly substituted indenes are described. The intermolecular coupling of aromatic ketones with alkynes on low-valent zirconocene species generates oxazirconacyclopentenes, which upon hydrolysis with 20% HCl for 3 h afforded indene derivatives in good to excellent yields. Similarly, the pair-selective coupling of two identical or different alkynes bearing at least one aromatic substituent formed zirconacyclopentadienes. Quenching of the reaction mixture with concentrated H2SO4 also results in the formation of highly substituted indenes in high yields.

Abstract: The intramolecular substitution of the angular methyl groups in steroids by attack of O-radicals derived from 6β-, 11β, and 20-alcohols is discussed. Irrespective of their genesis, these radicals abstract a hydrogen atom from one of the said methyl groups, suitably oriented inδ-position. The C-radicals thus formed give different products depending on the neighbouring groups. It is shown that 20-hydroxy-18-C-radicals combine with iodine atoms, to give 18-iodides which can befurther substituted through radicals to give potential 18-oxo-compounds in high yield. In the case of 20-cyanohydrines, the intramolecular reaction of the 18-C-radical with the cyano groups gives rise to the new 18-cyano-20-oxo-steroids. With 6β- and 11β-O-radicalssingle substitution in 19-position predominates, since the steric arrangement of the primary product favours the intramolecular ether formation over a second substitution reaction. A general reaction scheme for these transformations is proposed.

Abstract: A variety of 3-vinyl-substituted imidazo[1,5-a]indole derivatives were synthesized by intramolecular Pd-catalyzed cyclization of the title allenamides through either a domino carbopalladation/exo-cyclization process or a novel hydroamination reaction that proceeds smoothly under microwave irradiation. Both the observed pathways involve a π-allyl-palladium(II) complex arising from insertion of the allene group into a palladium(II) species, the latter being formed in situ by the intervention of an aryl iodide or of the N−H group. In both cases, the role of nucleophile is covered by the indole nitrogen.
