TL;DR: In this paper, the measurement of iodine in natural-water samples by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) is described and the limit of detection is 10pg/ml.
Abstract: The measurement of iodine in natural-water samples by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) is described. The limit of detection is 10pg/ml. The element is easily determined by this method without separation or preconcentration. Because iodine is highly volatile, the obtained signal is somewhat unstable. Iodine vaporization, however, can be restrained by the addition of an organic alkali (for example tetramethyl ammonium hydroxide), making it possible to obtain a stable signal. Analytical results using the conventional calibration-curve method and the standard addition method agreed well. We determined the iodine concentration of 42 natural-water samples in the northern Kanto area. The concentrations of iodine ranged from 0.65 to 35.9ng/ml.

TL;DR: A fungal laccase (Myceliophthom thermophila) has been shown to function as an iodide oxidase, suggesting that the property could be a common feature for copper-containing oxidases.
Abstract: A fungal laccase (Myceliophthom thermophila) has been shown to function as an iodide oxidase. Unlike other halides which interact with the type 2 copper site and are inhibitors for the laccase, iodide interacts with the type 1 copper site and serves as a substrate capable of donating an electron to the laccase. Under anaerobic conditions, the interaction between the laccase and iodide results in the reduction of the laccase type 1 copper and the concomitant oxidation of iodide to form iodide. In aerated solutions, the laccase catalyzes the oxidation of iodide to iodine and the concomitant reduction of dioxygen to water. The reaction exhibits typical Michaelis kinetics with aK
m of 0.16 ± 0.02M and ak
cat of 2.7 ± 0.2 turnovers per min at the optimal pH (3.4). The catalysis can be enhanced by 2,2′-azino-bis-(3-ethylbenz-thiazoline-6-sulfonic acid), which shuttles electrons rapidly between iodide and the laccase. Bilirubin oxidase also demonstrates significant iodide oxidase activity, suggesting that the property could be a common feature for copper-containing oxidases. Possible industrial and medicinal applications for a laccase-based iodine production system are discussed.

TL;DR: In this paper, the electrochemistry of gold in different halide solutions, with special emphasis on iodide, was investigated using cyclic and linear sweep voltammetry, and the effects of iodide concentration, electrode rotation and sweep rate on the electrochemical behavior of gold were examined.

TL;DR: In patients with AAT and goiter it appears possible that the thyroid fails to adapt normally to the excess iodide load, resulting in an inappropriately high RAIU in the presence of excess plasma iodine.
Abstract: Amiodarone associated thyrotoxicosis (AAT) occurs in approximately 10% of patients treated with this iodine rich drug in areas of mild iodine deficiency. The thyroid radioactive iodine uptake (RAIU) is usually undetectable or very low in iodine-induced thyrotoxicosis. In the present study, 35 patients with AAT were evaluated. Twelve patients had no thyroid abnormalities by physical exam and all had 24-hr RAIU less than or equal to 4%. In contrast, nine of 11 patients with AAT and diffuse goiters and eight of 12 patients with AAT and nodular goiters had RAIU values greater than 8%. In patients with AAT and goiter it appears possible that the thyroid fails to adapt normally to the excess iodide load, resulting in an inappropriately high RAIU in the presence of excess plasma iodine.
